Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Brake Bleeder Wrenches

Sears sells Lisle...:

The one one here in Lakewood has a large assortment of Lisle tools, though maybe not these wrenches.  Put your zip code in the window at the upper right.  It's possible your local Sears has it on the shelf.  But, may have to be mail ordered in.

Thanx Bobby ;

You're correct , the standard fractional Brake Bleeder Wrenches are 5/16" X 3/8" .

Mercedes , being properly designed , only require a 9MM 6 point box wrench , I need this tool for my old 1969 Chevrolet Shop Truck .

Nate R. suggested I look in NAPA , that's the only place we didn't look last Sunday , I'll give them a look soon , I'll also try to find a K-D and/or LISLE Tools catalogs as I'm sure they still make them , might have to order them in though .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Overheating 300SD

!!
Before you do anything else , try cleaning the cooling system with a Citric Acid powder and distilled water mix ~ this is what Ma 'Benz says to do , I wrote a treatse on it but I cannot find it .

Basically you mix one pound of Citric Acid with a couple gallons of distilled water out side of the car and fill your cooling system with it and drive it to work a day or two , then drain it out , flush it once or twice before re filling it with a 60/40 % mix of coolant and distilled water .

This is the proper way to clean the aluminum radiator hospital clean , it cannot damaged the various delicate aluminum parts throughout your cooling system .

Remember : coolant is LIQUID DEATH and it tastes sweet so your kids and pets will want to drink it and once ingested , THEY WILL DIE , no cure so have clean catch basins handy when you drain the old coolant out , wash spills away immediately .

The Citric Acid mix is harmless and can be disposed of easily .

If you cannot find Mercedes Coolant (it's special) your local Honda Auto Dealer will have the correct stuff , they even sell it pre mixed , not cheap but well worth the cost .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Overheating 300sd

Chuck,

Be cautious about the mechanic's advice.  He is probably RIGHT about build-up.  But may well be WRONG limiting it to the radiator.

These cars have build up of gunk in the engine cooling system, including the block and the heater core and all associated pipes and hoses.

Happily, this is a problem that can be easily addressed, WITHOUT replacing a perfectly good radiator.  Mercedes even has a factory specified flush product to do it.

But the basic solution is to flush, and then flush again, with CITRIC acid.  Citric acid can be found very cheaply at baker's supply stores.  Sometimes it is called "sour salt".

Get a big bag of it.  Drain the entire cooling system (drain at the radiator bottom or bottom hose).  Refill with a solution of citric acid in distilled water.  FILL.  Drive around the block or to the supermarket.  Drain.  Repeat.  Make sure that you have the heater on full bore when doing this to ensure flushing that part of the system.

The citric acid will react with schmutz in the system.  You will see horrible gunk comiing out when you drain the flush water.

When it has cleaned up the system, and you are getting relatively clean flush water, DO NOT put in anti-freeze!  Fill it with distilled water, then drive around.  You want to flush it for at least a couple of cycles with distilled water, to ensure that you get all the residue citric acid out.

Then refill with your choice of anti-freeze and drive happily for another 250,000 miles.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Overheating 300sd

Replacing radiator is a piece of cake. I found an almost new one (Nissin) in a PAP, but I had alreay put in a new Behr from Autohaus. Flush your motor and pipes at the same time. I think I posted pics under ?Brians new radiator? You can do it. My overheating is a thing of the past. I am dead on 83C (or 175F)

Steve and Board,

It has been two or three weeks and my car still looks like I have had it painted. The water beads just as if it were freshly waxed. I even went and bought a new chamois!

Steve, I went with this treatment on my hood, roof and trunk, because of the damage to the top clear coat. I still wax my coupe the regular way on the sides of the car where the original luster still remains.

In a few weeks I will put a new coat of this liquid wax on the top surfaces again but right now it still looks like the job was just completed.

Who would have never thought you could bring paint back to this extent, it's like driving a new car.

Hope this helps.
