Re: [diesel_mercedes] Valve adjustment on a 300TD 1980

The old MB diesels need to be ran hard enough to bring the temp up before shutdown.
Something about the combustion chamber will carbon up more if not at proper temps.
Daily driving short distances will cause issues with these.

I purchased a 240 D that had been driven for about 8 years on short distance travel.

I was instructed by a member of as different board years ago to do the following.
add 1 quart transmission fluid to the fuel tank.
This was to help loosen up the carbon in the motor.
Add weigh to the car to emulate 4 passengers.
Take it on a long run with as many hills as possible.

When I left home the car would die at lights, was only able to get 60 MPH top speed.
After a 5 hr run with many good hills and watching the motor temp get higher(but no where near the red line)
On my return the car was able to hit 90 MPH and it would not stall at lights(was still abit rough idle though)
After 10K miles with weekend highway runs,  1.5 hrs each way the car ran well and started great.

These cars like to be driven, not parked and not to many short trips.

I did a valve adjustment on my 300TD earlier this year.
Either two or three of the ten were tight.
I can't remember now.
Before that was 3 years ago.
Maybe 4 were tight then.
Still . . . it made some difference.
The OM617 in my jeep was another story.
Did them 2 months ago.
At least  half were tight.
Made a real difference.

By the way . . . When I first put that engine in my jeep last year it would surge and rock at idle and would almost certainly die several times before it warmed up. Now (after 6 months, a few Italian tune-ups, and several thousand miles) it starts pretty well and the rocking and surging is gone at cold idle. It's surprising. As if using it has healed it.
Comments?

I've gone 40 thousand miles since my last valve adjustment.  The last time I checked the adjustment was still good.  Has anyone else experienced a not tight situation?  Isn't the clearance supposed to shrink after 20k?  I usually adjust on the slightly loose side.  On my other 240 D's they always tightened up where I couldn't get the feeler gauge in..  Lawrence Rhodes
