[diesel_mercedes] Re: Where to buy transmission fluid

I've use the Valvoline synthetic from Kragen/O"Rieleys.  I have 40 k on one car
and It's smooth shifting.  I think it is Mercon VI or some such designation.
It's the one for Mercedes and GM I think.  85k is a long time.  Lawrence

Re: [diesel_mercedes] OMG Gas mileage SUCKED this tank!

We need to remember Patricia's earlier posts, where she talks about "stomping" it and being unhappy with the acceleration.  THAT's where the 18 mpg comes from.

These cars have the aerodynamics of a brick.  Not at all like the lovely, wind tunnel design assisted 126 model (300SD), which is much heavier and bigger, but regularly gets better mileage with the same engine that's found in the 300D turbo.

The 300D normally aspirated shouldn't approach 30 mpg, with even the best, most economical driver at the helm (YES, I know that there are dozens of you who want to post that you regularly get 40 or 50 or even 150 mpg - but NO ONE has ever been able to back that claim up with a peer reviewed test).

Considering the comfort, durability, safety, and just plain class you get while driving your 300D, turbo or non, you should learn to drive according to its needs and capacities and be happy with mid-20s around town and a little better over the road.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Where to buy transmission fluid

One thing people do when/if they ever DO change the power steering fluid, is to use, uh, power steering fluid, which is exactly WRONG for these cars.  They're made to run on Dexron (atf), NOT the usual "power steering" fluid....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] OMG Gas mileage SUCKED this tank!

Well, NOBODY gets 42 mpg out of these ironhead diesels.  Best you can expect is 24-26 mpg for a normally aspirated 300D.  That's pretty much normal.

The "valve thing" is actually your injector.  What is leaking ('near as I can tell from the photo) is the fuel return line.  These are the black hoses that run between each injector, and they are of a funky size and material, and difficult to find.  A good source for this stuff is www.autohausaz.com:

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=3pn1s04544xwmy45e5ukku55&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193981@300SD&year=1979&cid=22@Fuel%20%26%20Air%20System&gid=6352@Fuel%20Hose/Line

They will also have your valve cover breather tube elbow:

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=3pn1s04544xwmy45e5ukku55&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193712@300D&year=1981&cid=22@Fuel%20%26%20Air%20System&gid=6344@Air%20Intake%20Boot/Hoses

I can't really explain why you achieved 37 mpg on one tank, then 18 on the next.  That averages out to 27.5, which is pretty close to expected (and pretty good, too!).  How did you measure?  By filling the tank to the tippy-top of the filler neck each time?  If you went by the fuel guage alone, you should know that the sending units often get crudded up, making them at least a little unreliable....

What on earth??? The kid I bought my car from said he got 42mpg. I got 37mpg the first time I put gas in it. This time around I got 18mpg!!!!! WHAT??? I've done the math several times, checked my reading a couple of times. I know that valve thing is leaking, but THAT MUCH? No way! I did notice that my transmission wasn't shifting properly yesterday, but would that make my gas mileage go down that much? Oh man this isn't good.

Any input is always appreciated.

Fried being a nasty smell emanating from the battery and the battery being completely dead.  She didn't try to recharge it but swapped it for a new one at Autozone.   I'd like to further diagnose the problem before running the car with the new battery.  I'll pick up the tester but I don't remember if the lighter socket is operational.

Dexron/Mercon is the approved replacement for Dexron.  You can also use Dexron III or Dexron IV, which are synthetic fluids, so more pricey.  Many suppliers (like Castrol) also offer an "Import" fluid, which will also work.  Pretty much anything but Type F will more than match the specifications of the original Dexron B.

I've read over and over again in the book that my '81 300D should have Dexron B. Where can I find it? I checked WM, kinda figured they wouldn't have it. Checked O'Reilly, they didn't have it.

[diesel_mercedes] Where to buy Crank case ventilation hose & fitting for the valve cover...

I just added an album to the Photos section. It's called "Trish's '81 300D".

In there I put a pic of me with my car, but more importantly I have pictures of 2 items I have questions about regarding a rigged up item that I need to replace.

It's the Crank case ventilation hose & fitting for the valve cover & air filter housing.

The other picture is of a leaking valve or so I was told.

Input please from those in the know!
