Dang ! .
I was looking for a spare turbo but my son was just given a box full of spare Mercedes Diesel parts by a fellow Mechanic at his shop ~ it seems they guy had several Mercedes' but bought a Subaru and that was that .
Anyways , Jr. says there is a turbo in the box so he bagged it against dust & dirt and I hope to have my greasy mitts on it next week sometime .

But, other than a missing passenger mirror and dash instrument cluster, things look good. Very nice chrome rims, trannie fluid looks good ($160 w no warranty), turbo turned, engine looks good. I don't need anything major at the moment or I would be dropping the engine and transmission myself.

Cool ! .
I thought you were a So. Cal. guy .
I keep telling you alls : German cars are designed & built so you can take them further apart than they supply parts for....
The only fly in this particular story ointment is : it's a simple thing to separate all the various vacuum systems so you can test the tranny's shifting .
If he doesn't know this basic thing , I wonder .
He prolly does but wants to keep you amazed & impressed when he fixes it .
Carry on & keep us posted .

Hit the Ontario PAP on Milliken this morning. Usual suspects, and bout 15 MB's. 2 or 3 114's, a 116, assorted gas 126's + a diesel with lots of ice cubes someone here was asking about.

[diesel_mercedes] A Short Local Visit to Stuttgart
In my neighborhood here in Houston there is this wonderful old world German Auto Repair place that seems to specialize in all of our cars here on this board (Nate's Metro certainly the exception).
It is run by this old guy that is clearly from The Father Land. I stopped by the other day to hear what he said about my transmission flaring but I got much more, most of it translated through four letter words that I had not heard in a long time.
I never should have told him of my North Carolina mechanic or his fixing of my air conditioner. I can't tell you the ridicule and humiliation I took over the conversion of this AC away from R12.
Then there was his incredibly rich swearing when I told him of this guy pulling my dash out. He started with do you know how many XXX XXX vacuum tubes there are under that dash?
When we finally got around to my transmission, it was impossible to get him to separate out my transmission vacuum leaks from my door locks or who the hell knows of the inner leaks under my dash.
It appears that this guy rebuilds almost every part that goes bad on these cars. I told him of the steering box and the new rebuilt replacement and I thought he was having a cardiac arrest. He referenced a few simple seals that would have fixed it and then pulled them from his parts shelf. Same on the starter, same on the center joint, same on the air conditioner compressor.
Makes me wish that I had entrusted my car to this guy long ago. But it always seems that way on the front end. That hope that comes over me as I bask in the light of confidence of a real German coming home to his work.
