Here's how I have done it . . .

Pull the line to the #1 injector and turn the crank by hand a couple of times with the pedal at full throttle. This will fill the output spout with fuel but not spray it all over you. Then use a lint free towel or rag and blot up the fuel in the little spout until there is just a very little bit at the bottom of spout. The "spout" is a tiny funnel shaped affair and you just need to have the very bottom of it just barely wet with fuel. (I say "lint free" just to cover my butt. I usually just use the corner of a double folded t shirt.) Then watch it carefully as you turn the crank by hand with a long breaker bar type setup. You should see the level in the spout just start to change at 24.5 degrees BTDC.

But you needn't fear the dissassembly process either. And the "U" shaped tube can be made from a salvaged pressure pipe from another engine. Just bend it around a 14 mm socket and cut it off. Don't worry about flattening it - they are very thick walled.

I had a $500 junker '81 300CD that would not do cold starts on its own.  It only needed a mist in the intake, but it would start all day after that until the next morning.  It had lots of blowby and burned lots of oil.  The car was my fun non-running project on which I learned to adjust valves.  It was towed in, but drove out under it's own power!

[diesel_mercedes] Won't Start Diagnosis

If you take the time to read the responses and follow the suggestions in the correct step by step order , you'll find the outlay in tools and parts isn't much in the long run , certainly far less that having it towed to some local garage who might damaged it worse or sell you things you don't need , or do shoddy work because " it's just an old Mercedes " (shudder) .

Do the valve adjust and have the battery's ground cable off and the charger on it's lowest setting whilst you while away the hours learning how to adjust them and getting it done , be aware you really do need the special bent wrenches and a stepped feeler gauge to do it right .

Also , look in the clear plastic intake fuel screen ~ if it's black like coffee , or worse , has tiny chunky things in there that look a bit like old coffee grounds , then replace it with the correct one and buy a quart bottle of " DIESEL 911 " from Wally-Mart or your local truck stop and dump the entire thing into the fuel tank before proceeding .

Once it begins to run , it'll prolly chug and shake like mad ~ DO NOT let off the starter until it's running on all four cylinders and DO NOT release the throttle below 1/2 way or it'll stall out and flood (yes , Diesels can flood and they're bugger-all to get going again) , just keep it running , no pumpng thr throttle , it'll make HUGE clouds of choking smoke but it'll stop after a while so have faith and DON'T GIVE UP ! .

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. However, the reluctant start is a real  issue after idleness - I find that WD 40 or CRC 5-50 does the job but I don't really know why:-(

Thanks Max and Tom.   Not knowing how old this gasket is, I'm betting on having to replace it.  I did adjust the valves on the wife's 300D last fall.  I'm not sure I'll ever get it down to a half hour, but it should go faster this time around.

    You don't need a compression tester to adjust valves.  Invest in the Haynes manual for these cars.  It's no better than other Haynes books.  But it has clear pictures, diagrams and accurate data for the valve settings. 

 

    Pay attention to what Nate said.  You're going to need to do this operation every 3,000 miles.  By the third time, you'll be doing it in under 1/2 hour.

More perfectly good Mercedes Diesels wind up junked from lack of routine valve adjustment than anything else .

Once they're adjusted & the engine finally starts , you'll need to do them again in 3,000 miles maximum .

Just because you are adjusting the valves does not mean you have to use a new gasket. Of course you always want one on hand, just in case, but if yours is not brittle or cracked or leaking, no need to replace. Be syre to coat with wheel bearing grease when putting back together, even a new one. Max
