[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1970 280SL

A few years ago in Pasadena I stumbled across a one owner (Lady Doctor) 1971 280SL, it was pretty nice, the AC was dea they were asking $14,000.00 for it and told me they thought I could get it for $10K flat if I was careful .

It had a slushbox and was alpine white although Mercedes doesn't call it that .
I prolly shoulda gone for broke and borrowed the $ to buy it but whew, that's serious ca$h for a car I didn't know if I liked or not .

Of course, it had the original removable Pagoda hard top, who knows if she'd ever taken it off or not .

Just for grins I looked in my pocket money clip and I have $39.00 cash and about $1.79 in coins.....

I blew all my 'repaint' money on the 240D's engine and tranny, God knows if I'll ever be able to re spray it now ~ I'm looking into having my un damaged ivory color driver's door re sprayed white and assembling it then installing it my own self........

I'd surely like to test drive an old SL (pre 107) but prolly never will now .

Some of you who have $285,00 laying around may want to pick this one up. Granted, it's not a diesel, but you could always do an engine swap maybe.

This late production Model Year 1970 280SL was sold new in southern California to a brand enthusiast who kept the car until February 2014 when it was purchased by Mercedes-Benz Classic in remarkable rust-free condition. The subsequent, complete "nut-and-bolt" restoration by Mercedes-Benz Classic covered all aspects of the car including body, full interior, full driveline, i.e. engine, transmission, driveshaft, rear axle, full suspension, electrical system, etc. Special attention was paid to authenticity in detail, down to the original specification "Phoenix" whitewall tires. This 'matching numbers' car presents in a factory correct combination of Moss Green metallic (DB 834), Cognac (250) leather interior, Brown (8008) carpeting and a Dark Green (747) soft top. The exterior lighting of the car now shows in European specification for added appeal and as a nod to the original design brilliance of Paul Bracq. This newly restored Classic Mercedes-Benz represents the highest level of craftsmanship at Mercedes-Benz Classic in Irvine, California.

Asking Price: $285,000

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Slushbox

We'll see Max .

My power is close to maxed out now, I'm hoping as it settles in (less than 1,000 miles on rebuilt engine yet) the fuel mileage will go up, it certainly should .

I do religious fuel mileage checks and before the engine got really bad it almost always exceeded 30MPG no matter what .

Top was 36 MPG one trip from Vegas to L.A., fully loaded, I never lug nor over speed any engine .

I never really checked my 240auto. But on one trip to Reno, driving tru the badlands(boring) we kept the speedo pinned and the fuel mileage was horrible, probably around 18. I have checked the 4spd, a lot, the best I ever got was around 38 mpg, but normal fast freeway driving in excess of 70 mph was around 29 mpg. I'm betting the rear end from the auto would increase that. Max

452 miles, 26 MPG .

Better but still not what it was before the rebuild .

I was told as I buzzed over Kellogg Hill that it smoked excess fuel a bit, I had the throttle pinned to maintain 65 MPH .

It's 3AM so naturally I can't sleep .
