RE: [diesel_mercedes] Happy New Year and a parts request

I have one that I picked up when I had the ‘87SDL.  Pretty sure it’s good.  I actually was going to list it on Ebay to thin out these W126 parts I don’t need anymore (picked a horse in the race – the W116 300SD – an am dedicating my life to the OM617.  Well that and my wife and kids.)

Ping me offline with your address.  I’ll send it and if it works for you, you can decide how much it’s worth.

Hey Gang,

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone on the list.  May we all have a happy, prosperous, and successful 2011.

And, last night, I adjusted the driver's seat in my 89 W124 (a 260E, admittedly, a gasser) so my wife could drive it and when that ordeal was over, I found that I could not get the seat readjusted to my taste because of a failing switch.  I priced new ones at about $115.  Would anyone here happen to have a good used unit from which they'd be willing to part for a reasonable sum of $$?

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Where is TDC?

Figured it out I think and have moved forward.  Removed the rockers and started on the cam.  Removed the tensioner screw/spring from the block and the bolt that holds the plastic guide in.  How in the world do you release the pin that the plastic tensioner rides on?  It isn’t a bolt (or if it is, the DPO may have sheared it off.  HBOL and the FSM are not helpful so far.

In the middle of the head swap on the 116s and am sort of at a stopping point, fearful of the unknown. At the point where I need to remove the cam, etc. and have to set this mother at TDC. According to Haynes book of lies, if I line up the notch on the outside washer: http://www.48307.org/1979300SD/002.jpg

with the notch at the backside: http://www.48307.org/1979300SD/004.jpg

I am at TDC. Then again this is HBOL and I am a green bean. Thoughts men?

Not many diesel guys there.  Australia.  Really an OM617 question more than anything else.  116.org is great foe everything 116 EXCEPT the diesel motor.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 84 Benz diesel

Carmine, welcome to diesel world.

Lenses are available from ebay and PAP's (pick a part yards), as well as new. The cost can range from $10-$15 for junk yards, to $50-$100 on ebay, to $200 for new. The ones from PAP's may have cracks or veins but I see them on a regular basis and sometimes find pristine plastic.

As to "what" do you have - check the doorpost and your ownership docs. The terminology gets screwed up at times: "TD" technically does not mean turbo diesel, but people get sloppy. "SD" means the expensive sedan that rich folks in our group drive. "D" means the smaller version which we poor folks in the group drive.

Expect 25 mpg +/- as a normal. Lastly, don't worry about the door latching. This is a vacuum issue that has plenty of articles. There will be a gazillion posts here and all over the internet. Try the videos on Mercedes Source and the pics on diesel giant first. Get a couple of the books and manuals starting with Haynes (it is NOT the bible but a good reference. Learn to search this groups posts and pictures. Ask questions, we are friendly.

You can read about all of them including the Estate Car (called a TD) at

We just bought a 1984 benz 300D Turbo Diesel. It has a lovecraft single tank conversion. Have a few questions.

We need to pass a brake and lamp inspection. a couple of the light covers have cracks and guy says they are a fail. Where can we get these? Hoping to order online.

What model do I actually have. Thought it was a 300D. when looking up parts for 84, not listed. Is it a 300DT because it has a turbo? What year was the turbo added?

Passenger door will not lock with rest of the doors when driver door is locked from outside. Is this normal or how do I fix this?

Can I run straight veggie oil or any combo of wvo and biodiesel? My son will be running the car 100 miles round trip to American River College.

What kind of mileage should we expect with this vehicle?

Sorry for the questions but we are new to the benz deal. Have been running a Duramax on 100 bioD for 3 years.

thanks, Nick

[diesel_mercedes] w123 Air Cannister

I thought of Abraham Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address quote this morning as I lifted my wife air canister into the air ("The world
will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here"). First, my wife did not know that 2 of her 3 grommets were loose because the nuts had dropped off, thereby allowing her can to shake, rattle, and roll. Second, she does not know that I put new grommets, nuts, and washers on and cleaned 270,000 miles of grease and grime off the engine. Third, how exciting it was to discover a plastic cap like off a Tide bottle inside the canister among the usual bees, bugs, and leafy materials.

And, I took the first day of 2011 to also top off the power steering fluid - remember, I changed filters earlier and a dry filter soaks up an ounce or two of fluid.

Looking forward to more maintenance items in 2011 plus a few heavy duty mechanic type stuff - and a few good trips along the way. Next up - taking the drivers seat out of Martha and fixing what needs fixing, then valve adjustments in both cars, vacuum run downs on both cars, air conditioning rehabs on both as summer approaches, and radio/antenna cures on both.. Oh yah, the state is looking at an increase on car registrations to help pay our way out of debt. Lets see, 1.8% of vehicle value =s 1.8% x $2000 =s $30-$40 - yep, I can handle that.
