[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : After 40 years my coupe lost it's virginity today

Hit and split are the right words Nate. I thought about checking the security camera's that I know are in the parking area, but it is probably more trouble than it is worth.

Now I need some lessons on using a PAP's yard. I walked a couple of miles today searching for a 300D and turned up none. Seems like there places should have maps of what they have.

[diesel_mercedes] "new" car

I have had Helga for 14 years (81 300SD)use her as a daily driver and even take her on 600 mile round trips to Ohio ever two months or so. But another lady has cought my eye... a 1997 300e that has 170 thousand but is the cleanest 15 year old car I have ever seen. What do you all think of these cars. They are wanting around 5800 for her. I have not ever seen any of you discussing this era of diesels on this list. I know that this is not turbo only the 98-99s are. But it drives peppy enough. The first gear sounds different than my old 81 but the transmission shifts very smoothlly. What say ye?

Tom

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Black Friday

Why yes I did. Drove Mary (1983 300d) from La Verne to Huntington & Fremont area to visit my wife's unique family for dinner. The OM617 did not miss a beat. Filled both cars up on Wednesday for $4.03/gal, and had a tough choice as to which car to drive as each has good and bad points.

Oops ~

I over slept (didn't really sleep much atall to be honest) , stumbled out to my faithful Diesel Sports Coupe and lit it off in the deep gloomy pea souper fog , discovered I'd neglected to fill the tank and headed off to the local discount filling station where I tanked up on $3.979 / Gal. Dino Diesel fuel , discovered the last tankful returned 25.3 MPG , not great but not too bad either .

As I drove off into the gloom , heater , radio , head and fog lights all on , the Bosch voltage regulator kept the charge rate at 13.667 VDC for most of the trip to Pasadena , in time it reduced to 13.4 VDC indicating my battery is fully charged . .

I hope to soon replace yet another rubber air cleaner mount , this time instead of the URO brand , I got German round ones ~ I'd wanted to try to hexoganal ones but they were out of stock .

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving , I did .

I had some in-hand instructions from mercedessource, but I wouldn't have even attempted it without all the brake related postings and general encouragement on this board. My friends (and Dad) think I am awesome :) but I am a green behind the ears newb! I've got to change the brake lines back there and flush the fluid next...and I also noticed my right rear CV boot finally cracked open (that I"ll likely hire my guy Thom for). Such a long to do list...and I didnt get to work on it much while it was warm...

[diesel_mercedes] Re : After 40 years my coupe lost it's virginity today

Ah crud .

You'll be happy to learn the entire taillight Ay. comes out with just a few 7 MM headed screws.

The replacement lens new comes alone , I prefer to search the junkyards until I find a nice cherry one with the correct shade turn signal lens and buy the whole thing for le$$ than the new lens alone .

Remember to look closely at all the bulbs before you carefully hand clean them with tissue paper , any that have black or silver inside the globe , are ready to die so replace them now .

Did they just ' Hit & Split ' ? .

Looks like that may be the extent of the damage, I can't see any sheet metal that was effected, but the lens, chrome surround and inner lens cover are all trashed. HELP.....

[diesel_mercedes] Re: RockAuto Catalog Wholesale Closeout Part Listings : 1984 MERCEDES-BENZ 300CD 3.0L L5 DIESEL Turbocharged

Jim ;

I tend to agree ;

Rock Auto tends to have good stuff , not amature hour .

When Tom's W-126 starter gave up the ghost 2,000 miles from home , in the middle of a Road Trip , after dark , when it was cold out , we'd been screwing 'round replacing everything else first and I hoped to take it apart and massage it back to life but the solenoid crumbled to bits in my hand so off we went to the local NAPA store who's rebuilt starter luckily for us , had a brandy new solenoid on it ~ Bosh starters always need _new_ solenoids , never buy one that's got a rebuilt solenoid .

IMHO the best way to deal with these starters is have the one you remove from your car rebuilt by a good shop. The rebuilt ones from FLAPS are not good from my experience. Rebuilt by amateurs.

[diesel_mercedes] : Re : Periodic AC Service

Don't exhale just yet Tony ;

And for sure , don't forget the flushing and the ancilliary parts : receiver-dryer and new expansion valve , I bet you can get those on order now and have them ready when you take it to the HVAC Mechanic ...

NAPA and other OnLine places will have the flushing kits .
