Re: [diesel_mercedes] Junkyard Tools

I am thinking of graduating from the old "thing lawyers use" to the one with the folding plastic cart on it.

What I do is :

I keep a 5 gallon plastic bucket full of the tools I use to work on the car , this way , when I get to the junkyard , I have all the tools I'll need plus a few more as often the grille has 7 , 8 , 9 & 10 MM headed screws holding it on so I carry a full set of cheapo Metric nut drivers along with four different size phillips head screw drivers and so on .

If ever I need to do some heavy work I go to my tool box for the big 1/2" drive ratchets and sockets .

Here in Sunny So. Cal. . home to lazy Journeyman Mechanics like me , I usually find an old shopping cart in the parking lot or inside the gate , I always ask the yard apes to go fetch it and then load my bucket of tools into it for easy access .

Or , you can buy one of those inexpensive folding hand cart things Lawyers etc. use , they'll carry your tool box or bucket easily , just remember to use a bungie cord or rope to hold it from falling off and spilling all your tools .

Dean,

You want all the tools you'll need, for the parts you want.

I always do a quick walk through with just a few tools: screwdrivers, a
few wrenches, vise grips, etc, to see the cars on the lot, while having
a larger tool box or 5gal bucket with more tools if needed. Don't lug
the big box if there's no parts to be had.

Don't forget hand cleaner and some towels.

[diesel_mercedes] Routine Battery Service

Per request :

Routine Battery Service

Interestingly ;

Batteries that can have the vent caps removed for routine service , are once again becoming common .

Often the filler cap is one long plastic strip that you can gently pry up on one end then remove .

Always use ONLY distilled water in your battery , it's cheap in the grocery store , $1 the gallon and it's best in SWMBO's steam iron too , always keep a jug under the kitchen sink and AND NEVER USE TAP WATER IN ANY BATTERY ! .

Automotive lead / acid batteries only need service one a year or so , I try to do them in the spring so they're ready for the summer's heat .

If the battery is damp /oily across it's top or has corrosion built up on the cables & posts , carefully remove it from the vehicle fist then wash it away from the lawn , in the laundry sink or near the end of the driveway , using a bit of liquid dish soap and any old rag you can toss out when you're done , be sure to physically rub every inch of it with the soapy rag including the bottom then allow to air dry , I put a pencil or old screwdriver under one end to allow air to dry the bottom too .

Don't worry about the corrosion , it's water soluble and will rinse right off with the soap & water .

Then you can remove the filler / vent caps and fill it with distilled water , only to the bottom of the filler neck ~ as soon as the water touches the lowest part of the filler hole & begins to curve , STOP ~ overfilling is a bad thing .

Leaving the damp oily crud on the top of the battery , keeps it always under charged as there is a parasitic drain through the dirt & oily crud .

DO NOT clean nor wash the battery whilst it's still in the car ! .

Get up ,and out to start car, turn key a click thats all.Lights, and
ect.. work.
Test neutral switch by trying to start in neutral, nothing.Checked all fuses, nothing.
Assume dead battery try jumping,nothing.
Hook up battery charger for 4 hours nothing and voltage stayed the same,12 volts.
Just decided to check water in battery, one cell low real bad.Add water and start car,she fires up.
Moral of story, check your water in battery first.

[diesel_mercedes] Holiday Fun

Here's hoping all here have a fun & relaxing Holiday ! .

As it turns , I had five consecutive days off so of course I worked by stupid bum off ~ Tom came by Sunday morning and we went to walk the P-A-P yards , sadly almost NO W-123's were found and the few W-126 Diesels had their engines removed complete .

One of the yards had an un advertised 1/2price sale so I got another Becker radio for $9.00 .

In another yard I found a Becker Electronic with a rebuild tag on it , paid $15.00 , maybe now I'll have a working cassette player .

Various other niggley little parts were found too , " Just So " screws , nuts , washers and such , the detail things that keep your vintage Mercedes running like a champ and yes , the details *D* matter !~ =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] Cheap Tires

I had a connection for $32 Korean tires that seemed O.K. , they gripped really well and rode nice too (some modern tires have serious road noise issues) but in the end , the greater weight of the Mercedes Automobile killed them fairly quickly as did the fact that any pothole , flat or low pressure , ruined them before you can pull over and change the spare , this negated any cost savings whatsoever .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Transmission Slipping

In the Mechanical Parlance this is called " flaring " and leads to rapid wearing of the $pendy bit$ inside your slushbox .

First , I'd check the vacuum hoses connected to the primary black plastic vacuum pipe as they're different , one is 0.6 M and t'other is 0.5 M , sounds close but connecting the tranny shifting vacuum hose to the 0.5 M one stopped all the flaring in SWMBO's '82 240D .

The way the vacuum valves work is : as you give it more throttle , it cuts down the vacuum signal to the tranny ~ ideally when the throttle is floored is goes to zero vacuum at the tranny or really close to it

I discovered this basic mistake after I'd paid a long time Indie M-B Mechanic to sort it out ~ he'd made a world of improvement but missed this basic step .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Recommended junkyard tools

I usually take a multitool on the initial look, so I can get small stuff, but I keep the tools out of sight while I am looking.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Glow Plug Timer Relays

Agreed , 34 years & 400,000 miles is a very good part life indeed .so another used one should do the truck , when we/I/you find one .

Tom and I went Yard Walking Sunday and there were precious few Diesels there , lotsa Gasser W-126's though .

I saw  one or two late relays but you said you're using series system , correct ? .

Interestingly , when I had GP relay troubles last year , I dug out my various used relays and played musical relay game with two cars and only had to toss out one or maybe two relays , the others all seemed to respond from just being touched , not even opened so I wonder if maybe the Pin typ MPC's get corrosion that needs periodic cleaning to keep them at peak efficiency ? .

Yes I took it apart & got rid of the big volcano on the contacts.  However I
think it's the capacitors that went bad.  34 years and 400k miles is plenty of
time for it to live.  Instead of tearing apart the board and putting new
capacitors which BTW is just a guess.  It's probably just cheaper and easier to
find the original relay and count to ten.  I've seen them with the old style
glow plugs for 101 dollars.  I just need the relay as I"ve gone to the fast
parallel plugs.   Think a used one will last a while?  Really don't mind if the
new ones are built as well as the old ones.  400k and 34 years is good for any
part. Lawrence Rhodes....
