OOps ~ I forgot to post the good BOSCH P/N , here it is now : 1 197 311 023

Don't let them overcharge you , IIRC this one is under $20 and worth every penny .

Be sure to get two , in a couple years you'll be glad you did .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: battery/headlight/alternator

Chuck ;

NO relation to the new headlight .

These otherwise fine cars tend to stop charging but not turn on the red dashboard warning lamp so you happily drive until it suddenly won't start .

FWIW , for less than the Mechanic charges to (maybe) test things , you can buy an alternator tester that plugs into the cigarette lighter and shows *exactly* what's going on under the hood .

If you have access to a battery charger , you can complete the entire testing cycle at home for less $ than taking it anywhere .

Remember to try turning the alternator's fan by hand , if it isn't really hard to make slip in the belt and if the belt doesn't squeak when you force it to turn , the V-Belt is too loose ~ look closely at the narrow part , if any cracks it's JUNK and waiting to snap and strand you .

Fascinating.  So... Does owning old Mercedes diesels cause diabetes, or is it diesels generally...?

Well you asked for it! Diabetic type 2 since 20 years, off my insulin pump since 5 years now because of LCHF a diet which has now given me gout in my left wrist. My heating broke down just before Christmas last so I spent 3 months wrapped up watching the idiot box all day long in zero temperatures - this brought a blood clot to my leg and oh yeah, what's left of my teeth give me jipp on a regular basis. However, still going strong on wvo and now putting an OM 617 into a Range Rover. Ooh, ouch, grunt, groan, curse........

One of the reasons I like this group is that our bodies are falling apart. Not our car bodies, our real flesh and blood bodies. I let my blood sugar run wild last month (type 2 diabetes) and my kidney back ache meant I was not going to crawl under the cars for any reason. But today, ah that is another story. Today I put the rear end into the air and replace my 4 rubber donuts on the muffler. I also tie a snippet from a coat hanger on one or two of the hangers as a safety measure because rubber donuts do not live forever (I know about the bicycle chain donut, my way is easier and cheaper). Then I will scootch around and see how good my steam cleaning was - might even decide to eat lunch if it is clean enough.

So, I nominate June 01 as Ache & Pain Day in order to allow all of you to chime in as to what makes you special in the world of achy breaky benzes.

[diesel_mercedes] Peachparts

I just spent an hour wandering the Peach Parts DIY pages, once again admiring the photographs they use to illustrate repair jobs. If you are not familiar with their DIY series, check them out here.

http://tinyurl.com/437gep9

There are some really great resources available to us on the web (dieselgiant and mercedessource come to mind, but there are many others). I usually do a google or bing search for whatever I am working on, and that often will lead to one of these DIY sites. I love the photos though and sometimes will print them and take them out to the car.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: battery/headlight/alternator

Such a short would almost certainly blow a fuse instantly.
I'm just guessing here, but I'm leaning toward a stuck glowplug relay or a bad regulator/brush set.
Bogy.

Thanks Tom,

Does the light glow if the regulator is bad? I will check on my drive tonight.   I think I am praying for a bad battery.  But I will check the wiring to the headlight, to see if I pinched, pulled, or otherwise caused a short.

It started in the AM, but not after I stopped for breakfast.  I will say the lights, radio, and air were still on when I tried the restart.  But the 40 miles at 70 mph should have charged the battery even more.  I will check and report back tomorrow.
