Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Going off grid- Bill

Trish,

To back up what Bill was saying - the MB diesels were originally designed to be stationary engines, so if you find a 240D engine in fair condition, it would make an excellent engine for backup when making you own power.  And it will be enough like your car that it will be familiar to work on.

Trish and all,
Okay, here is my $.02 on the subject.
1. Start small, a couple of solar panels, charge controler, and batteries. Wind is more complicated and is more to maintain. Save wind generation till you get your feet wet with solar.
2. The most efficient way to get away from the grid is to use less electricity (conservation), so you will need to generate less.
3. My Mercedes diesels are a big part of my plan. Notice that I am keeping this thread on topic!! I can make fuel for them. I am a school bus contractor and we run all diesels so I end up supplementing the fuel with bio fuel. I just love my MB's.
4. It is possible to grow oil crops, press them. to extract the oil, and use that oil to run the Benz.

Small steps.
Cheers,
Bill

By popular request more pics of that nice brick wall, notice how the stairs fit so well into the mortar work.

Really was amazing, I stumbled into the middle of a photo shoot, & they invited me to take any pics I wanted. I asked her to dance for me and this is the result.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Going off grid- Bill

my array (that I'm just now getting permitted and ready to "grid tie") is
set up for the same thing, Rob.
it's 2500 watts. which, should zero out my bill. The problem with over
producing, IMHO, is that the power company pays you what it costs them, to
make the power, once your bill gets to zero.
so, here, the payback drops from 11 cents kw/hr to 3 cents.

is that how it works there?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re :GG car clubs

No, I haven't heard of that car club, though I don't know of many car
clubs.
This MB list is the closest thing to a car club I belong to.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Going off grid- Bill

Max,

You're correct, gas heat, and very little A/C, though that electric hot
tub eats a bunch of power. It has only become worth over generating, in
the last year, as before that the power co. just zeroed the account once
a year, keeping the extra power. Now they have to pay for it. I should
get that bill/ refund shortly, to see how it was calculated. Next would
be to get a TOU meter, which could further increase savings, as long as
you don't need to run much power from 10-6pm weekdays. (There's 26-
Kyocera 205w panels on the roof)

While the MB would be too heavy to convert to electric, though I was
thinking about converting the old Toyota Truck, before the head repair
fixed it up OK.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Replacing Power Steering Filter

Yes ;

The round filter is inside the pump , remove the lid & gently work off the clip and washer holding the spring , then dip your fingers down into the brown , gooey muck that's supposed to be ATF & lift it out  , I use a War Surplus Dental Pick to lift it out , drain the pump (I use a cheap turkey baster) & have a looksee , there's another resivoir underneath the filter , the worse crud will be there , especially in the hard to see & reach corners .

LINT FREE TOWELS ! .

Once clean , flush it until it's clean or you're broke , replace the filter , spring & washer , if the clip shatters , no worries , use a 6MM " Speed Nut " from your FLAPS or nothing but the washer , the lid will hold everything in place .

I hope this clarifies my earlier post .

Re: [diesel_mercedes]Re : Cruise In

Where? The car show is on Main St. G.G.:
http://www.mainstreetgardengrove.com/CarShow/

They block off Main St. and line the cars up. It's free.
It's mainly American Steel, classic cars.

Let me know if you're going, as I'm only a few miles away.
