Gasket goop deserves a chapter all it's own. Which, if any, to use depends on the gasket and the joint. What I mostly use on my Merc is some stuff called Gasgacinch, a very thin rubber cement. Serves no sealing purpose, glues gasket to a surface so it doesn't move when parts are assembled. Trivial to remove. For prospective leaky threads, clean 'em out and use blue loctite. NEVER use red loctite for anything. Ask you mechanic if he has any Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket. If he produces a tube, get in you car and leave. Find another mechanic. Never go back... bk --- On Tue, 12/27/11, patricia_dougherty <9729219527@mms.att.net> wrote:

I see the injector return line. The line runs back to the banjo bolt, carrying the excess fuel that wasn't used.

I posted a pic in my album Trish's... Not sure what this is. Is it a vacuum hose?
Even though these aren't disconnected I want to know what they are. I just know there's someone out there that knows.

[diesel_mercedes] What do you think of this list of MB's?
I was prowling through the Benz World Forum and found this list.
BUY LIST
240D non-turbo
300D non-turbo
300CD non-turbo
300TD non-turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)
81-85 300sd turbo
86-87 300sdl turbo
87 300d/300TD turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)
94-95 e300 non-turbo
96-97 e300 non-turbo
98-99 e300 turbo
84-85 190d 2.2 non-turbo
86-89 190d 2.5 non-turbo
87 190d 2.5 turbo
Avoid List
90-91 350sd/sdl turbo
92-95 300sd or S350 turbo
Actually all of the 617 engines were good... in both Turbo and non turbo...The 240d's are good if you don't mind the massive amount of bugs that commit suicide on the back windshied. But avoid the 1977 240D because the heater is a nightmare to work on.. same can be said for the 1980 300D... Many mechanics will tell you that the absolute best years for the 617 diesel engines were the 300D T's in the 123 chassis between 1982 and 1985. I didn't know that unitl after I stumbled upon my rust free, no cracks in dash, all power locks, windows, ac, workiing, good compression 1982 300D T, that cost me all of $400. So in that regard, I was lucky not smart.
Also most MB mechanics will tell you to avoid the 86 & 87 300SDL and 300TD because, if they're not allowed to come to heat before driving and cool down before shut down, the aluminum heads tend to crack at the casting bosses.
I have always been told buy diesel mechainics and MB mechainics that the 86-87 300sdl and 87 300td are the best too buy as far as power even though they may not run quite as far as a 300sd they will still easily get to 500K. I guess it may just be depends who u talk to on those models but mine and everyone i personally have talked to loved theres and never had any problems. But yes if they have been over heated then avoid unless the head has been replaced. I just sold mine toon here
The 87 300D and 87 190D 2.5T are my personal picks for the best cars.
I had also heard good things about the 190D2.5 one of our past posters had one. The 87 300D had the same engine as the 86-87 300sdl so basically that comes down to if u like the W124 or the W126
What do you think???

can anyone help with a radio wiring diagram why won't the antenna go up?
[diesel_mercedes] 1985 300D turbo top switch panel
Is the top switch panel run by one bulb? What is the size of those bulbs?
Thanks!
[diesel_mercedes] Correct pic for name this time
I posted some new pics to my album. I posed a question about a heat looking thing, but realized later that the pic was incorrect. I've fixed that now.
The possible vacuum hose looks like fabric. What are those? Do they need to be replaced or upgraded?

[diesel_mercedes] Nate and Gasket Sealer
Oh I missed one of your emails and realized later that I was about as clear as mud when I asked my question.
We dropped the oil pan to replace the gasket and wondered if there was a particular gasket sealer we should use. My question was answered when I was informed that the gasket is seal enough.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Gasket sealer
HUH?
shit I thought she was sealing it internaling
[diesel_mercedes] Re: Gasket sealer
Oops. Well, lesson learned. Yes, the old gasket at the bottom of the oil filter was gunked on. We did use some sealer when we replaced that gasket. We won't on the oil pan.
Nother question...why do the bolts holding the oil pan go all the way through? Kevin noticed oil was leaking through the holes, meaning it was coming up the threads.
