[diesel_mercedes] Hirshmann antenna troubles.Only read this if you need to fix yours..

I think I have the relay spindle wrong and will try again but it is super
simple. I pulled out the old smooth plastic cord. Super easy. Just flip the
mechanical unit. Undo the two screws holding the relay and connectors. Unit was
retracting and extending electrically. However the new antenna only went in
half way which is why I disassembled it. Any secrets? Could I change it to
manual since I popped something. Rats.... Never mind. I fixed it and it was
the spindle. You must have both relays closed to start. You can see that as you
spin the spindle back and forth. Now installed and working properly. Just pop
off the mast plastic wire holder under the retraction mechinism held on by an
E-ring. Extract the old antenna remains. Put it all back together making sure
the relay is closed. Extend the antenna. Insert new antenna and retract not
forgetting to screw in the mast retainer before the next extension.. On this
model no grooves to align. Lawrence Rhodes

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Monrovia PAP Visit

Well, as I recall, it was just outside the Euro area on the end of a row. I'll keep my eyes open next time I head that way.

I wonder if it's still there .

I _ALWAYS_ need to know whenever a junker Metro pops up as the local Metters as well as me , NEED PARTS ! .

No matter how bad it looks , there's always something I can use .

The last one was bent every inch , they were getting it ready for crushing , I was lucky to find it *just* in time , I'm still P.O.'d I didn't get more parts off it but the rain and my ijuries ya know....

In addition to the normal 4 or 5 rows in the far southwest corner, they had 25 cars across that section to the north. Lots of w126 gassers as usual. Two or three 4 & 5 cylinder diesel engines that had not been picked over yet. Lots of grills, and plastic lamps. Quite a variety of colors and models (including BMW's, Jags, Volvo's, etc). Even an old battered Nash.

[diesel_mercedes] Sylvia - 1984 300 SD - bad alternator makes her go wonky....

Sweet ! .

This is why you should buy a cheap used alternator and install the correct BOCH brand regulator and stash it , so you'll always have a spare , the alternator warnng light is incomeptently designed so it's useless unless the V-belt snaps .

How much $ was the replacement alternaor ? .

New or rebuilt ? .

Last week, my son came to pick me up at Boston Logan and as he pulled in, the seat controls were activating on their own(!), the dash lights were coming on and off, windshield washers wouldn't work, and sadly - when he turned off the engine, it wouldn't start again (dead battery). Thankfully we got it started and limped it home, then to the garage. My guess at the time was a bad alternator, which was confirmed. I had it rebuilt when I swapped the engine in 3.5 yrs / 35K mi ago, and last year it needed a voltage regulator. This time we bit the bullet and put in a new Bosch unit. Add in an oil change, air filter and basic tuneup service and she's back on the road. Odo still busted, now tracking mileage by number of gallons of fuel consumed - coming up on 300K any day now. To further confirm why I love this car, two taxi drivers at BOS offered to buy the car on the spot, knowing full well what it was and the (decent) condition it was in.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : San Diego PAPs - need info

Yes ! .

Near S.D. is a place called Chula Vista and East of the I-5 Freeway are some mesas , on the top of them are a whole buncha junkyards icluding several P-A-P's ,two or three more on Energy Way an in Oceanside , off SR 178 (I think) is one more at the bottom of the first long downgrade on the right ~ it's a block back from the Highway but you'll see it as you descend , turn right at the stop light at the bottom of the grade , I always find good old Mercedes' in there .

WELCOME to Sunny Southern California ! .(leave the salt & rust @ home please)

Bring a small camera and sneak some photos .

Wherever you travel grab The Yellow Pages nd look under " Auto Wrecking Yards " ~ never waste time calling as NO JUNKYARD EVER KNOWS WHAT ALL THEY HAVE ~ just grab you grubbies (work clothes) and GO LOOK .

Happy hunting in the land of rust free junkers that shoulda been saved .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Left Rear tire scuffing.

Interestingly , I just discovered this on my '84 30CD , the inner 1/4 of the tread was worn almost completely smooth ~ I discarded both rear tires as the other one had a flat and both were weather checked by Californa SMOG (makes me wonder what my lungs look like) and the tread had worn to about 1/4 tread left .

I'm thinking trailing arm bushings after 29 years and 360,000 miles , the miles I've put on it are very hard & fast miles indeed so mayhap it's time to replace them all back there , not looking forward to that job .
