There is a Merc Camper among the "worst-ofs;" a few of the others dont belong in the category of bad cars, IMO. The fiero based "gallardo," is impressive.

Old diesels are known for shaking at idle.
Mounts, injectors, wear, most everything contributes. But
mounts and injectors are probably number 1  . A injector is
supposed to spray the finest mist you have ever seen but
given wear it gets not so fine= rougher running. But diesels
keep running and running, just not so smooth. I still have
my injector bench tester, havent seen it for years tho.

car vibrates at idle

Just getting
familiar with the mercedes and have had no other
experience with them.A new to me 84 300D vibrates very
loudly at idle.

It is so noticeable that the sunroof is making a loud
hum.

I just got the car started this weekend. Owner had said the
trans quit working
and had lost the ign key.

I picked up a key and ign at the junk yard and added some
trans fluid since it
was about 1.5 quart low.

car seems it will drive fine now but have only drove it in
the yard so far.

when it is at idle there vibration all over the car so
anything that will make
a noise or hum does so.

Rev the car up and the hum goes
away.

It is possible I just need to idle the car up.

It kind of reminds me of the vibration I felt in a
TR6
I had when driving and it turned out to the a drive shaft to
rearend U joint.

But with the 300D the vibration is at idle in park.

Has any one seen this before?

I have not checked motor mounts nor have I checked
transmission mounts.

[diesel_mercedes] Lowering Compression

Only by removing the injectors or glow plugs and that's not going to help when you're trying to prime it .

[diesel_mercedes] Help bleeding fuel system after filter replacement

A couple of ways to approach this :

I like to position the engine to TDC as indicated on the crank pulley then crack the # 1 injector pipe right at the injector _one_ flat only , pump away until you're getting fuel weeping out with every pump stroke .

Remember : if the hand primer pump has a knurled edge , you must first unlock it by turning the handle counter clockwise until iot clicks slightly as you gently depress it whilst turning , DO NOT forget to re lock it after you've pumped ! .

Then , hold the throttle to the floor and crank it until it not only runs but begins to overspeed the starter , let off the key but HOLD that throttle down until it clears out and begins to roar .

I assume you remembered to fill the new (spin on) filter with your choice of Diesel fuel or <magic>Go-Go Juice before installing it ? .

Hey guys,

After completing the diesel purge on my 83 240D, I can't seem to get the fuel system bled. I cracked the outlet line from the main filter to the IP and got fuel out. Cracked the other end of the line (input) line at the IP and got fuel out. I've loosened the injector lines and cranked in 20 second bursts and haven't gotten anything at the injector lines. Cranked so much the battery needed a recharge.

Am I missing a trick or do I need to just keep cranking?

Thanks!

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 300D car vibrates at idle

WELCOME NEWBIE ! .

First things first , it needs periodic valve adjustment else it'll shake like a paint mixed .

if it's really oily under the hood the motor mounts may well be shot too as Diesel contaminated oil attacked rubber and plastic fast , this is why it's so important to keep after the oil weeps & seeps and always shampoo your engine a couple times a year .

You're going to need some bent 14 MM open end wrenches to affect the valve adjustment , a new rockerbox gasket too .

I remember forgetting to fill the primary (big) filter once after installing a new one. That was the last time I will ever do that. Almost wore the battery down trying to get it to start.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Help bleeding fuel system after filter replacement

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I went back and started from scratch. Still no joy, so I pulled the injector lines and had my son crank the car while I worked the fuel and pumped the primer pump. After a few seconds, the IP finally started spitting at me. I installed the injector lines, bled them and then got it started.

After a quick test drive, I washed the front fender and all is well.

Like Bogy said, crank with the the accelerator pedal all the way down, and it'll eventually fire a few weak pops.  It should start pretty soon after that.  It may take quite a bit of cranking....

The pump was nearly dry down there.  I worked the primer pump until fuel came out of the hole, then replaced everything.  It started pretty soon after that.)

Guys,

I meant to say that after the diesel purge, I changed the fuel filters, and so now I can't seem to get it to start. I think I've purged the air from the main filter by cracking the banjo fitting on the outlet line from the filter to the IP. I've also loosened the injector lines and after a cumulative 3-4 minutes of cranking (in 15-29 second bursts), still see no fuel at the injector lines.

As I asked previously, am I missing something, a or do I need to just keep cranking?

Check into the rack dampener. There is an upgrade and it can be
recognized by the gold color vs the silver color of the original. Google
"rack dampener" Mercedes.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Help bleeding fuel system after filter replacement

I'm assuming that you used the primer pump to fill the fuel filter,
until diesel runs out at the top of the filter, usually I just not fully
tighten the center bolt on top until it's full. If the filter was full,
you shouldn't have needed to purge the lines. I'd start back at the
filter, and make sure it's full, then start purging the lines again.
There's a bubble in their somewhere.
