Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Gremlin Hunt

Also, check to see if anyone did any "creative" wiring, like bypassing the fuse system and wiring things directly to the battery.  The PO of my 1988 MB decided to do some "direct" wiring that I didn't notice until I had to get under the center console one day and found that someone had spliced some wires together, running off the hot lead for the drivers power seat, which will operate with the ignition off.

If I read your answer correctly, take out the driver door bulb and see if the drain stops. If so you have located the drain. Also if hte light did not go out when you pull the fuse, I believe you have the wrong fuse.

That's good to know...and seems easy enough now that I know what NOT to do ;)

Well it sure was the way I tried it ;) Fluid drippin n splashin. I had about 9 seconds of freaking out and then I remembered to enjoy the "ride" (and learn)

Hopefully I'll get to this tomorrow after I get the car back from the shop (v-belts, driveshaft securing).

Cheers!

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Gremlin Hunt

Hi Chuck...thanks...more clarification...

The test light had a low glow the entire time, even when the fuse box was totally empty. (It did not go out when I pulled the - or all - fuse(s))

My first symptom was the rear dome wouldn't go out. So I unplugged that, and that's when the rear driver side door light "took over"...now *it* won't go out. So if I unplug it, I'm wondering if my symptom will swim upstream?

Not only am I a beginner, but the electrical thing I am *totally* new to (I mean...not to electricity...I use it every day!) and still have a LOT to learn :)

My friend has a volt meter and I can borrow that to do more troubleshooting.

I will try pulling fuse 15 to see if indeed the door light goes out...according to the chart, both the rear dome, and all door lights, are on it....let's see if i'm looking at the right chart ;)

Betty's in the shop today getting new V-belts and her driveshaft secured.

You have The Evil Klima I Servo ~ it's prolly dead as it has a motor inside it that controls the _4_ fan speeds .

I gave away all my spares once I was rid of my 1980 Sports Coupe .

Consider the " Unwired Tools " Digital Servo up grade , kinda $pendy but a one time fix , Vs. the two or three year constant need to screw with The Evil Klima I Servo from HELL.......

I'd replace the entire Monovalve first , the coil occasionally poops out along with the rubber diaphragm .

I guess it could be the sensor if I was lucky. Anyone know the next culprit? I'm guessing it would be the part referred to as the temp regulator unit, or amp, or whatever, the $125 silver box under the dash? Anyone had experience with this? I guess it could also be the pushbutton box with the temp wheel. I don't know how all this stuff works together. Thanks for your help.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Timing Chains Etc.

Yes well ;

Maybe so *BUT* ~ Tom and I were looking at a very nice 198? SEL Saturday , trying to figure out WHY the hell it had been junked with nice paint , perfect interior , no oil leaks etc. when Tom noticed the left side alloy cam cover was all cracked where the cam chain had smacked the inside if it when it jumped time....

Not a total loss though , i found a decent condition $5 emergency triangle in the trunk , i got the holding clip too .

Now I just need a W-116 clip so I can use it .

Rain delayed, but hit the Monrovia / El Monte yard today. Nothing there along diesel lines, some w126 gassers - but, nothing for me to back for although they are moving the storage area around and have bulldozers, concrete forms, and gravel - maybe some osha requirements?

Will do Ontario and Pomona tomorrow.

I talked to George Murphy the brush guy and he said it's vacuum related.  I
figured as much.  By unhooking the green vacuum line at the T at the fire wall a
vacuum leak is caused not allowing the other buttons to work.  Lawrence
