[diesel_mercedes] Cooling System Service

Well ;

Vinegar is rough on the many alloy parts, I don't want to ruin anything .

best I've used so far is the Citric Acid mixed with distilled water .

I was out of state and having heating issues so I had to go to the FLAPS and get a yellow plastic bottle of cleaner, it *might* be Prestone brand, it has Citric in it .

In any case , yesterday afternoon  I gave it one last flush with distilled water and mixed up some Zerex G-05 50/50 % with distilled water and filled it ~ow it's back to running evenly 82° C again .

Vinegar is great for older all cast iron and brass cooling systems , not so much moderns with aluminum and plastic parts .

Nate – you can also use straight white vinegar to cleanse the system.   Most of the crap that is sold

for cooling system cleaner is weak.

The best I've used is Thoro Flush:   http://www.irontite.com/aws_vid.html

Used it and the vinegar in my 49 Ford flathead cooling system and was surprised at all the junk that

came out when I back flushed the system.

Now, with all that crud floating around in the cooling system, the radiator could get full of stuff

and need to be 'rodded out'.  Where the two caps are taken off and a rod is used to clean out each

tube in the radiator core.

Back flushing is a big deal too, as it pushes most of the crud out of the radiator.

Need to get agro with it.    Once squeaky clean, add coolant and one bottle of water wetter.
