Re: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator out and tested good...now what?

Back to looking for the junction box on top of the fender. It shouldn't be hard to find. It's inside the hood on top of the inner fender with wires leading to it.  I've found that cleaning these connections can make a big difference.  You might also clean the connections on the ground cable that runs between the block or trans and the body.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Removing alternator with L bolt.

You have to remove one bolt(bottom)Remove nut one one(L bolt)  Lossen one bolt.(Bracket bolt)  When the bracket bolt is loosened you can pull up on the bracket and then you can loosen the tensioner nut. The alternator is all floppy at this point.   The L bolt twists sideways and it comes out easy.  Don't drop the alternator on your head or ground.  Don't force the L bolt.  If it doesn't come out easy you are doing something wrong.  The three big bolts are 17mm/11/16.  The tensioner nut is 13mm.  Once you know it's easy.  The secret is loosening the bracket.  It gives clearance to undo the tensioner nut which releases the L bolt.  The hardest part when it goes back in is the long spacer on the L Bolt.    Lawrence Rhodes

It's been a while since I did one but IIRC you need to use the factory cheapo looking open end wrenches to remove the bolts from behind as those 17MM nuts are welded to the brackets up front .

Maybe I took it off the engine with the top piece still attached...

It seemed weird but once you do one , it's simple and fast .

I'd love to find it in So. Cali . if possible .

This is the big square AC radiator thing in front of the car , not the under dash part ~ that's the ' Evaporator ' .
