O.K. , this is weird ~

When I get in my Coupe @ 0-Dark:30 , I get heat , as soon as the sun comes up , the AC begins to blow cold .

The EC button is supposed to provide fresh outside air but all I can get is heat .

Go figure .

Nate,

You know, for what ever reason, my Becker cassette player will spit out my cassette adapter every time. If I could get it to stay in and make contact that is exactly the way I would go, but I can't get it to work.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Brake warning light

1. Mercedes Source is testing some new "dustless" pads and should be reporting back.
2. Also, check your hoses for expansion or rot - if the fluid has not been changed in a million years, you may have absorbed some water which may be rusting your calipers. As long as it is in the air, it is a good time to  take care of business.

Expect to change the front pads every few years , not necessary to machine the rotors most of the time .

DO buy new " brake wear sensors " ~ they're little delicate wire thingies that fit into the front pads so the first time it blinks the dash light when you apply the brakes , the rotors are not all ground up . these sensors are really cheap from some suppliers, others (NAPA IIRC) charge 4 X more #$ .

Do pull the rear wheels and have a looksee at the rear pads as they need replacement every two or three sets of front pads .

It's a simple DIY job but USE SAFETY STANDS as your Mercedes is a heavy beast and will kill you if it gets the chance .

So far , I've not discovered any truly dustless brake pads and yes , I have tried the Dealer pads , they're great but @ $70 a pop , I expected close to zero brake dust , not the same dust as the cheapo $9 pep Boys pads .

Be sure to remove the outer wheel bearings , clean and re - pack them as if you don't , ere long you'll hear a faint humming noise as the old dry bearing dries out and grinds itself to death .

Used bearings are fine from the junkyard *IF* they're in good shape and you take the time to bang the inner races out as they wear in sets ~ tie the bearings & races (inner & outer) to - gether with scrap wire or a shoelace .

Use CLEAN RAGS on bearings always ! .

If you're desperately poor , used brake pads will work fine but they'll usually squeak like mad .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Becker Fun

Well Chip ;

I did say I'm not happy with it because it looks different but it _IS_
still a Becker Electronic that fits the hole correctly and has the correct connections and yes , it's happily playing away right now ~ the grubby faceplate bugged me to distraction so I took a clean lint free rag and some Meguiar's # 40 Plastic Cleaner and soaked the corner of the rag and rubbed the faceplate until it shone like new again , then I mopped the dashboard and cleaned the sweat stains off the driver's side inner door panel , yes , I like to cruise with my elbow out the open window like God and Mercedes Benz intended.....

One rag will clean quite a bit of plastic / vinyl of you're careful .

FWIW , SWMBO's nice '82 240D has a fancy-schmancy Kenwood CD Deck in it , I hated it from the jump but she says leave it alone because I/She can play CD's in it....

Of course , my CD's are mostly 1920's & 30's Blues with often non PC lyrics , the Foster Boys seem to enjoy them , SWMBO maybe a bit less.

I still have a few early Beckers and in time I'll either fix the dead one or pull out another old one and make it go .

I bought a tape cassette adapter at the .99 Cents Store , it works great , now if I can only figure out where I put the brand new pocket sized CD player I bought to use with it....

Nate R. hipped me to a place that repairs Beckers and other old Car Radios , I know ADSIT sells rebuilt Beckers but I hear nothing but complains about ADSIT so beware...

I hope this helps ? .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Becker Fun

have you tried a casette adapter? one of those $9 things, shaped like a cassette that has a wire with a jack attached. I've been using one in another car to play a MP3 player. The cassette adapter may still work even though the belts in the player are worn out.

Nate,

What an apostasy!  I am almost positive this change out violates one of the original Nateisms. There is nothing worse than turning on one of your internal beliefs.  This could end up with you in the gutter with a Panasonic or Sony!!

Enough of that.  On the way to work this morning I was actually thinking of finding a repair source for MY ORIGINAL BECKER.  My radio is still awesome, more than I would ever hope for, but my cassette deck has not worked since I have owned my coupe.

Any suggestions on who could do a job like that right?
