Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel filter housing discovery

If you think that you may have a clogged tank filter, before messing with the tank screen, try some Startron enzyme with breaks up the diesel slime into burnable sizes.

You can also try swapping the connections of the rubber hoses under the hood between the one from the fuel tank with the one going to the return line.  There's no strainer on the return line port at the tank, so if the car runs better, you have a restricted strainer.

Is there a check valve somewhere that keeps pressure up in the system?
It seems as if I have to build it up every time I shut it off.

Hey Nate,
Looks like they are sold out. Boy did they go fast.

Yeah, maybe that pump is causing my problem. I was shocked when it could hardly get out of its own way this afternoon. After dinner trip it was OK, but then on the way wack it sagged again, but just at first.

Actually, it was Jeff Fennema in the Chicago area that used to make those wrenches.  He's been long gone from this list since he sold his 300CD to pursue other interests.  I think he was going into metal sculpture....

I just use off-the-shelf Craftsman wrenches.

What? These seem very heavy, look like they could be stainless. Anyway, my nut pics work just fine. Cleaning and re-installing soon.  Max

I now have one Chinese (I guess, there's nary a mark on it anywhere) front caliper and both old ones set aside for rebuilding or exchange if I can ever find the darn things in stock anywhere .

Yea well, no hurries at this point. Already been a long time. I can get brass toothbrushes. Seems like Nate thinks the pistons are stainless. They are heavy and seem like it. First time for me to get into calipers. I always assumed there would be o-rings to seal but these are truly pistons. just a machined fit. Starting to get nervous about fire. Smoke from BC overtook us today, again, and sounds like everyone is in for the long haul and fires break out every day somewhere, you just hope its not you. Max

Yes Sir, correctamundo. I actually never looked, but I was told n-o ring, my guy thought it was on the piston. OK, got my little brass brushes, cleaner. For a dental pic I got nut pics. 2 of them because I might break one(cheap), might try to put more bend in it if needed. Why is such a simple plan so difficult to actually pull off?  Smoke is making breathing questionable. Summer, gotta love it. Max

Make sure you do what is needed to get the bleeder screw loose. Might be smart to replace it. If you break it off, you will be a sad man. It might be necessary to use an oxyacetylene torch to get the adjacent cast area reddish hot. Do not just heat the bleeder screw. Use judicious power on a good fitting 6 point socket to work it. Do this after you have taken the caliper completely apart.

While the housing is cooling, take some time to make certain that the bleeder screw is clear or dirt and rust. Just above the tapered (sealing) tip is a very small sideways hole that leads into the hollow interior. Use a small drill bit to clear the bleeder screw from both directions, then blow it clean. If it is at all dodgy, get a new one.

Notes: #4 injector seeping fuel, fuel return hoses original, dodgy. Next

Fuel primer pump leaks when it is being used, seems weak and weepy. Will
replace that too. You OK with the Bosch black pumps?
