Re: [diesel_mercedes] Stolen

Chip,

There are several on the Houston Craigslist right now. They are pretty rough but might be something you can work with.

Trans is out of this one. It is on SW side.

I wish I had the $$$ for this one!

"Grandpa's car" but no pics

And I have one that is pretty rough if you are interested in a pro.

There are several non turbo cars also. I have a couple of the, too.

So I woke up this morning to my 300CD turbo gone from its parking place.  Stolen right out from under my window.

Help!

I have full coverage on the car so first line of help will be to get the insurance to pay the worth of the car.  Completely original turbo coupe.  Never even a dent.  187000 miles.  New interior about one month old.

Second help is to find another.

Sad day in Houston

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear." Marcus Tullius Cicero 42B.C.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Stolen

Chip,

I hope you recover from this.

This is exactly the situation where insurance companies rip people off.  "Your car is more than ten years old, so it is only worth $500."  Please let us know what response you get and from what company.

There are companies that let you declare the value of the car.  But they will only cover cars that are rarely driven.   This is my supposition - has anyone dealt with collector car insurance?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] To Do List

Go Brian!

The MB seems to be good for a bit, though I still have a few things to
do on my wife's 240DL Volvo.

Then I have to bang my rear view mirror into place on Mary (harder than it looks in the guys video). Next, will finish my order for nuts, bolts, diesel purge, gaskets, etc. to Autohaus. And finish up with washing & waxing both cats, maybe tackling fixing Martha's driver seat and replacing map case on the drivers side.

RE: Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: Passing Inspection/Emissions test

 Thanks both of you.

Pre-inspection of safety stuff done by my indie (was a Mercedes master mechanic at MB dealer before going out on own). He just can't do the exhaust partculate inspection.  As noted there are just a few testing locations that still have the equipment for older cars and they are not user-friendly (the inspectors, that is).  Inspection fee is fixed by state and barely worth their time.

Joe,
I did a quick reading of RI inspection rules,  older diesels have safety and then just a test of the exhaust particulate levels.  an Italian tune up may help.  they use an opacity meter. drive it down the street from a stop to 30 mph, have someone follow you to see the level of smoke.  Better yet you follow, this may put your mind at ease. fyi only 25 testing locations in all of RI for diesels.  In California my diesel was exempt, in Texas only a safety inspection is required, not emissions test.

Hope you find a location close to you.
Chuck

I have a 1991 300D due for its bi-annual emisssions test.  I usually use MMO with diesel fuel and add Diesel Kleen or SeaFoam occasionally.  I can get B20 at a truck stop once in a while, in which case I don't use any additive.  It doesn't appear to be a "smoker".  When I'm under heavy acceleration I think I see a little fog in the rear mirror, but hard to tell.  It does have 288K miles on it.

QUESTION:  When I bring it in for the emissions test, what is the best thing to have in the tank?  Straight Diesel, B20 or diesel and an additive?

I'm in RI, which I think is not as strict as CA.

Any advice?

Joe
