[diesel_mercedes] Additives

1. It dipped below 70F here in the Los Angeles area, so I added 4 oz of Winter (white container) Diesel Kleen. I know that technically "winter" is still 21 days away, but there is snow in the mountains.
2. Had a drip, drip leak out of the power steering pump. Couple of mechanics wanted to piddle fiddle with the pump. I chose to try Lucas Power Steering Leak Stop. It has stopped the leak so far (2 weeks) - hooray for Lucas.
3. Transmission was slipping. Thought I would have to take it in to "Victor" for a post fix adjustment. While checking the dip stick, it were dry as a bone. Two quarts of trans fluid solved that problem, but raised concerns about a shop that fixes trannies, but doesn't run the car and then top off the fluid.
4. Shockingly, I went 320 miles on 12.0 gallons (26.6 mpg). At the moment I will say it is new tires, properly inflated, and superior driving skills.

I'm in Moorpark , Ca. , slightly NW of Los Angeles , we're having a Vintage Car Back Road Rally to - day while everyone else is having fist fights over Korean TV sets @ WallyMart and watching the salespeople starve .

I just filled up , 315 miles , 25.6 MPGs . I'd hoped my newly rebuilt tranny would help improve my fuel economy but apparently you have to _slow_down_ a bit for that , not much chance of that is there ? =8-) .

At least the rain tapered off to a slight drizzle .

[diesel_mercedes] Cheap 300D On E-Bay

 Well ;

You've gotta begin somewhere .

The inner door panels often get those wrinkles , I'm not sure why .

I think white with the Navy interior looks very nice ~ certainly it's a very popular color combo these days .

I don't see any rust bubbles .

Interior looks bad on the doors.? heat or moisture issues?

[diesel_mercedes] Electric Windows

 O.K. that's good ;

It still seems to me there's a power relay and the window power doesn't go directly from the Ign. switch .

There should be a cardboard inside the fuse box lid that details which fuse powers the windows ~ test that with your test light _before_ you touch the fuses ~ I can't tell you how oftn I find bad connections on the fuse box when the owner insists all is well .

Then you'll have to trace the power source from the fuse box , the wires are all color coded , prolly black with a colored stripe .

The wire you're looking for should have the same color stripe at the switch , that *one* wire where , if you apply power , all the windows work normally .

I wish I was more help than this ,electrical is always slow , deliberate work but very rewarding once you figure out where the open circuit is .

FWIW , the Performance Parts catalog shows what relay does what and where it's located , usually on the left front inner fender housing .

Silly question Kevin but I'm lazy soI always  do things the " K.I.S.S. " way:

Take your test light and ground it well to the engine , remove the fuse box cover (it takes gentle wiggling to get it off or back on , be careful) , then turn on the key and begin gently touching the tester to each end of _EVERY_ fuse ~ there's a good chance one will light up on one end but not the other . if you find this , replace that fuse with a copper (yellow) strip one , _NOT_ another grey metal strip one and keep testing , usually there's several poor contact fuses .

Don't feel ' dumb ' when working with electrickery ~ it's not the same as other things .

My '85 300D has been driving me nuts with a window problem. Since I am dumb when it comes to tracing electrical problems I just replaced the switches and the relays with new ones. Still no working windows. Yes, I'm talking all 4 of them.

So, in desperation, I printed out the schematic and tried understanding the flow of electrons. I am able to jumper from the battery directly to the "a" and "b" terminal on the fuse box and all 4 windows will open and close just like a well behaving window should.

So, tracing the power feed into the "a" and "b" locations in the fuse box, it appears that the wire comes directly from the ignition switch. Therefore, it seems that I am getting no power from my ignition switch to my windows fuses. I can confirm this with my volt meter.

So, now it seems that I need to replace the ignition switch in order to make power go to the windows when I turn on the switch. Has anybody ever had this problem? I don't want to spend big money on an ignition switch if the problem is somewhere else. Everything else electrical works when I turn on the ignition switch.

Thanks,
Kevin

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Air Conditioning Costs.

Well Tony ;

To do the job correctly you'll need to open the condensor and evaporator connections and flush the old oil , sludge and metal debris from the dying compressor out , I imagin his would make a $1,000 job .

Just replacing the parts you mentioned and re charging it (hopefully after properly evacuating it) I imagine $500  ~ $800 depending on the co$t of the new (rebuilts are trash) R4 compressor.

In Mexico you should be able to get R-12 freon at no additional cost , this will make you very happy indeed as nothing cools like R-12 .

The compressor has been clanking since may so I know it is shot.
