[diesel_mercedes] Road Rally & Fuel Economy Check

Greetings from Lompoc, Ca. ! .

The Fall TT Run is well underway and we're (I, anyway) all having a blast .

I'm in my 300CD and its running well, no problems, I'm still seeing reddish opaque stuff in the pure distilled water I'm running in the cooling system, Thursday I dismounted the surge tank and spent some time cleaning the accumulated settled rust silt out of it and late last  night as I was headed home from the driver's meeting I stopped to check and the coolant was tomato red again so I dumped it and re filled with distilled water.....

I should have added a bit more Citric Acid powder but it was late and I was tired/lazy so instead at the lunch stop to - day in Cuddy Vally I cadged a slice of fresh lemon and squeezed it into the surge tank......

It's only a tiny bit but the water was slightly cloudy so we'll see what I get to - morrow, 350 + miles to - day alone .

I have two fuel economy checks :

One is for 10.15 when I ran mostly flat footed in the i5 freeway a few hours, drained and refilled the coolant , 365 miles, low fuel lamp lit @ 335 miles, 19.3 MPG, no AC used Biobor added .

To - day I filled up at 350 miles, no flat footing but a fair mount of locked in third gear in the twisty canyons keeping it moving right along between 2,000 ~ 3,500 RPM's .

The car rally hauls well at that speed /load , often I'm faced with a rapidly approaching hair pin turn and letting off the throttle in third gear slows it down quickly with out needing much if any brakes,a handy thing when you're on sandy mountain roads .

Also no AC (I unplugged the monovalve and leave the electric auxiliary coolant pump directly connected 24/7 )

22 MPG .

Some of the old farm to market back roads are in really poor repair, making me wish for a longer travel & more compliant suspension, I'm all beat up from Drum Canyon Road and going to sleep with pain pills now .

[diesel_mercedes] Axles installed today

I installed 2- rebuilt axles- (Cardone 60-9022) today.

Not too hard to do, beyond crawling & wrenching under the car. Now just
waiting for the sealant to cure, then add gear oil tomorrow.

Hopefully, all my noises and vibration are sorted out. I'll report back
later.

I found this forum thread which summed up the procedure:
