[diesel_mercedes] Drive Axle Tool ?

The annular typ CV joints on my used axles have one side splined , what's the correct size ? .

I think I'll need to go buy a new bit here .

I got off my duff yesterday and carried two milk crates full of Diffy and drive axle parts (plus air cleaner and other misc. Junk Yard bits) in from my Coupe's trunk and set them behind my truck so I'll hopefully soon get the lead out and begin cleaning things , preparing for the new CV joint boots to arrive from The Classic Center .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Quality

I can tell you that in Los Angeles area , Chevron's Diesel went from good stuff to yellow beer/piss colored crap .

My Son thinks all Diesel fuel is yellow , it certainly is not . good Diesel is clear or blue .

I've been using Mobil of late then he hipped me to the HPR veggie based fuel so Tom and I are trying that .

The Gasoline thing is really true ~ I have Gasoline powered Motos of various ages and capacities , all of them run *much* better on the ' premium ' blends regardless of brand .

The 87 octane swill we get in California as RUG is total shyte ~ it makes my low compression engines ping and knock .

How about the diesel???

First rights of refusal to this righteous band of diesel fanatics, I am at car capacity and Silvia has to go. She survived two years of flight school at Florida Tech in the caring hands of my son while returning her for one last visit to its port of arrival, Melbourne, FL.

Still in good running condition - still gets ~25MPG, comes w/ heaps of spare parts salvaged from donor and a stack of maintenance and parts receipts to make any junk yard parter-outers drool.

Will be figuring out how to properly present it for sale (EBay?) and not expecting a lot on an open market for it, but want to make sure this group has dibs. All serious inquiries considered, would prefer whoever gets it takes the whole lot as is at what we mutually agree is a fair price. Seems so simple. :-)

Car is currently registered/insured/driven in MA (01460 area code) and inspected through July 2016, should pass and will re-inspect on Aug 1.

Please reply direct and will send more details/photos as/if desired..traveling through US for most of July - will respond as soon as I can.

See you on the other side....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D Engine in Jeep CJ7

Truth is, Nate, I don't really know all that much about Jeeps. I looked at some CJ5s and I couldn't fit in them. The CJ7 was longer and the extra room was for the drivers legs so the longer door is probably an artifact of it being a CJ7. That said the local Jeep parts guru isn't sure by my description what it is. YJ tubs have the tank fill "door" below the left tail light and covered by the license plate. Mine is below the right one. It has a CJ7 dash but it doesn't quite fit right. It has holes where there are no nuts on the tub to bolt it to. So it is a bastard mix of ???. So I think the tub is an early experiment with the YJ tub.

One guy who came by to buy some parts off it that I didn't need said it has a YJ tub. I don't know how he knew. I have a buddy with a 94 YJ and I don't like the instrumentation on the dash. To damn wussy for my taste in Jeeps. So I'm glad for the CJ7 style dash. Eventually, though, I'm going to bend a new piece of (probably .08") sheet and clean it up

Thanks for the comments.

Bogy.

O.K. ;

It's been like 35 years since I worked for Jeep so pardon if I make mistakes here , O.K. ?.

IIRC the CJ7 was the InLine 6 cylinder derivative ? .

I agree , for actual no nonsense off roading , a four cylinder is prolly the best option .

Not sure about the  manual gear box though as the last Jeep I drove was a 1952 M38A1 in 196? m, it had the four cylinder F-Head engine , very robust and trouble free but one hell of a stiff clutch .

The door opening in your good looking Jeep looks  longer than I remember Jeeps having ~ is this because it's an '81  or a CJ7 ? .

It's an 81 CJ7 with an early YJ tub. This is my second MB diesel in this jeep. The first was a 300 but it had poor compression in 1 and 2 and the tranny wouldnt go out of second until it warmed up. This 240D came available last Christmas and it has a manual transmission. I think jeeps should have 4 bangers and manny trannys.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240d engine in Jeep acting up

Well, It's been a long time coming and will likely be a work in progress as long as I have it. I will probably always be fiddling with something on it. But everyone I know has told me that I need to do a video documentation for Youtube . . . so I probably will. The really interesting stuff is the ways I had to mate the German (metric) to the American (inch). I'll let you know when (if) that video is done.
