[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300TD Slushbox

I've been working on my gray market wagon, routine maintenance and addressing some loose odds and ends, one of my Foster boys carelessly slammed the R.R. door on the seat belt buckle and shattered it, it still works but I can't stand knowing it's broken....

I just replaced it last Summer too, same problem, lazy & careless kids .

So, off I went to some local LKQ self service junkyards, sadly it turns out the W123 wagons use a wagon specific middle seat seat belt.... sigh .

I was able to find one in decent shape in New York and bought it, I hope it comes soon .

Whilst I was fruitlessly searching for a seat belt & retractor I ran across and purchased an air cleaner 'T' bracket for $9.95 out the door, sweet .

Coming home I wanted to reach the ProPel filling station and ran it close to empty, the low fuel lamp lit @ 353 miles, I made it to the filling station @ 437 miles, 23 MPG, no AC used, Biobor and once the low fuel lamp lit I swerved back and forth to swish the dregs of fuel and crud around in the tank, the clear plastic intake screen I replaced yesterday once again had some fungus chunks in it - less than a tea spoon worth, I changed it out and filled it up, already cleaned the dirty intake screen, I hope I'm getting to the end of this fungus problem .

Back to work on it to - morrow, I hope to get some done before y pain level gets too high to continue .

Maybe some dashboard works and see if I can find the central locking vacuum leak .

[diesel_mercedes] Junkyarding Fun

So ;

  I was out junkyarding to - day, looking for a right side middle seat seat belts for my old Mercedes Diesel Station wagon, it turns out it only fits W123 wagons dammit . (I think I have one inbound now from New York, whew) .

As long as I was looking around a HUGE self service yard I decided to look at the trucks and found several Ford Rangers, apparently they're all the same from 1995 ~ 2011 .

Several had aftermarket CD players, I want the correct plain wrap factory one, it's made in Brazil and part of the "Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group" that most here are un aware of....

After a while I realized there are loads and loads of Ford Explorers, this is supposed to be built on the same platform and Lo ! many had the identical dash boards and several had factory CD players..... .

I gently and carefully removed one, yes ! it uses the same harness plug .

Just to be sure before paying I carried it over to the same 2001 Ranger I have and tried fitting it to the fascia.....

Uh, oh ~ no dice .

The Explorer's CD player has about 1/8" wider and taller face so it won't fit in the Ranger's fascia.... .

Oh, well, I'll keep looking .

In another Ranger I discovered a *perfect* undamaged shift lever with knob and rubber boot, left behind by whomever removed the engine and tranny

More than 1/2 of these trucks had detached shift knobs and it's part of the whole shift lever .

I'm a regular at quite a few self service yards and they're always telling me '! you buy the strangest stuff no one else ever wants!' then they give me a discount....

$16.00 including tax ? YES PLEASE .

Back to work on the wagon to - morrow .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] apologies from Bill in Oregon

Hi Bill ;

? Was there a complaint about my last message ? .

I've had so much difficulty getting to groups.io that I gave up .

I can't just send them an E-Mail copy, it bounces back .

Hot here to - day ~ 85* and me in coveralls and no sun hat in the junkyard....

I've been waiting to see how far I could go on one tank full after adjusting the tranny's vacuum control, the low fuel lam came on at 389 miles and it began to sputter @ 506 miles so I coasted off the freeway and replaced the clear plastic intake screen (it'd been very clean until the bottom of the tank) , dumped in a gallon of fresh Diesel fuel I was carrying and made it to a filling station , 510 miles total .

Sadly still only 25 MPG ~ I'm gojng to try adjusting the tranny to up shift sooner and hope that'll get my fuel economy back to where it used to be, 27/32 .
