Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cheap 300D

I love how the ad says no reserve, but the lowest bid you can make is $800.00.

Not to say the car isn't worth $800.00.

must have had a new paint at some time.
Interior looks bad on the doors.? heat or moisture issues?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: Electric Windows

Nate,
I already replaced all of the fuses with the good copper ones and cleaned all the contact points.

My '85 300D has been driving me nuts with a window problem. Since I am dumb when it comes to tracing electrical problems I just replaced the switches and the relays with new ones. Still no working windows. Yes, I'm talking all 4 of them.

So, in desperation, I printed out the schematic and tried understanding the flow of electrons. I am able to jumper from the battery directly to the "a" and "b" terminal on the fuse box and all 4 windows will open and close just like a well behaving window should.

So, tracing the power feed into the "a" and "b" locations in the fuse box, it appears that the wire comes directly from the ignition switch. Therefore, it seems that I am getting no power from my ignition switch to my windows fuses. I can confirm this with my volt meter.

So, now it seems that I need to replace the ignition switch in order to make power go to the windows when I turn on the switch. Has anybody ever had this problem? I don't want to spend big money on an ignition switch if the problem is somewhere else. Everything else electrical works when I turn on the ignition switch.

Thanks,
Kevin

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Air Conditioning Costs.

Well Tony ;

To do the job correctly you'll need to open the condensor and evaporator connections and flush the old oil , sludge and metal debris from the dying compressor out , I imagin his would make a $1,000 job .

Just replacing the parts you mentioned and re charging it (hopefully after properly evacuating it) I imagine $500  ~ $800 depending on the co$t of the new (rebuilts are trash) R4 compressor.

In Mexico you should be able to get R-12 freon at no additional cost , this will make you very happy indeed as nothing cools like R-12 .

The compressor has been clanking since may so I know it is shot.

[diesel_mercedes] P-A-P Fuel Tanks

Diesel fuel and it's fumes , is explosion proof unless compressed .

Why do they only do this to old Mercedes' and not other brands ? .

They bend the necks so they're less prone to exploding if some tosses a cigarette in them.  Bill

Nothing anywhere near me sad to say .

Kinda $pendy too ! I can get plenty from my local Pick-A-Part yards *but* they tend to poke HUGE holes inn them plus they often bend or pinch the filler necks for some odd reason .

I _know_  there's a junker somewhere in So. Cal . In can pull the tank out of and the owner will be happy to get $ for a never needed part he'd otherwise throw away .

I bought some really nice carpet mats from Lloyd's Mats , they match the original carpet color *perfectly* and , SWMBO loves them .

FYI - Last year I put floor mats in both cars from these guys. Although "pricey" at about $200, I have no regrets and would do it again. Their advert showed up in my email this morning, but as good as they are I don't anticipate needing replacements until 2050.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: No Start

It had to sit in the garage all night warming up then started. Put the white bottle in first thing,

Kroger gas attendant said he did not think it was winterized.

It has been running since then in the cold front.

Happy thanksgiving.

f it ran this morning , go get the white bottle and dump it in , drive it at least 30 minutes to get it all mixed in properly .

Can you put a 40 watt light bulb under the hood ? this helps more than you'd think as does blowing warm / hot air in the air intake , use a hair dryer .

Well winter is here and I did not get the white bottle.  I think I have gelled diesel fuel.

I tried the hand pump and the fuel comes out the hand pump like it is not getting any further past it.  Clogged filters or something.

Jumping the car did not help although battery was way down from so many attempts to start.

Car worked fine this morning.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Re: No Start - Block Heaters

I'm not sure there's anywhere a magnetic heater will work on an OM616/617 engine .

The in hose heaters work great but they must be installed in the lower inlet hose else the thermostat will close and keep the engione cold and radiator wamrm , not helpful for cold starting .

Have you peered under / behind the turbo charger to see if there's a block heater in there now ? here in Sunny So. Cal. Tom and I see them often , always with the electrical  cord gone missing but I imagine Tom Hansen @ The Classic Center can get you the correct cord easily and affordably , mailed right to your front door no less .

My car does not have a block heater and I dread what might happen if I pull a freeze plug in a 30 year old car.

Its cold now and do not have use of my garage due to another project and the quickest way to get a block heater is with one of those magnetic ones.

Any one have any experience with the magnetic block heaters ? Do they work as expected ? Do you need to pull them off before driving ?

I had a car with an inline tank heater, boy that thing got hot, unfortunatly, that was all that got hot so I dont want to go that route.

Thanks
Steve
