[diesel_mercedes] Front/Rear Glass replacement.. w126

 

The rear has the legendary de-laminaton.. 

The front had two stone chips-- the first I was told wasn't a candidate for the "repair" stuff they do-- a second happened about a week later..

...that turned into a "mustache" last week..

My "other" 300SD has similar glass-- so "parts car" won't help here..

Thoughts about Safelite replacement??   Better or worse than "junkyard replacement?"

I emailed safelite for a "quote..."    The car is liability only, for insurance-- so it's "out of pocket" no matter what the route..

Do front screens become "brittle?"   Did 'Ma Benz' ever sort out the delamination on the rear screens?   I think 90% of the ones I see roaming NW ohio have "some degree" of it..

The car is going to continue being my daughter (17's) daily driver..  Her goal is to keep it "forever..."   So I try not to much around going "cheap" here..   The car doesn't look at at the moment.. *shrug*

[diesel_mercedes] Vac diagram/question w126

 

I've known for some time that I've got a vac system issue in my 84 300SD..

The central locks don't "extactly" work..  The drivers door locks the trunk and fuel door..  Not the car doors..

On cold days (and when the engine is cold) the engine doesn't shut off with the key..  Locking the door doesn't shut the car off (as my old 240D did)-- but pressing the brake pedal does..  Pressing a different button on the hvac controller does, as well..  (Changing from defrost to vent, I think is what I did, yesterday..)

I've been having cold start issues-- I'm wondering if the pump doesn't have enough vacuum start?  Is that a possibility??

after the engine starts, even a second or two of runtime-- it's a non-issue..

The glow plug circuit has been interrogated to death-- and it's functional, the glows have all been ohm tested (with removal/replacement scheduled...)   It doesn't "ACT" like a glow plug issue..

I just unscrew it and pump and screw it back in.

 

my problem was no fuel to the pump in the first place when the fuel was jelled. no fuel came out of the bleeder screw on the fuel filter when pumping with a manual pump.

I don't know about yours, but I always unscrew the white plastic top and pump it until pure fuel is flowing, and then screw the white plastic top down until it is finger tight. No fuss, no muss, no air bubbles either.

PS - Replacing only the #1 cylinder glow plug solved the starting issue. Now I just have to decide whether I want to replace the other 4 or wait until I get another dead one.

Snow, by itself has nothing to do with car rusting. But if you drive where they dump chemicals for ice then that takes its toll. Around here I think they started using a liquid chemical, sprayed on the roads before snow to prevent ice buildup. Someone told me its like the stuff in tractor tires, calcium somethingor other  .In NE Washington where we certainly get a snowy winter, rusted out cars are not a normal thing, but the cars from back east and parts of Montana are. max

I now have more $ than he's asking , in my European Spec. 300TD .


As I built it for SWMBO on her request , I don't mind never getting any $ back out of it , she keep it in her garage when not driving it .

As for the springs - he never asked me about the rear suspension before he began to work on it and when he saw the sag he assumed the springs were bad. When the new springs also sagged then he did his homework.

It's not perfect, like I said. But it's not bad. He got very meticulous as he went on and learned about these beauties. He may never get what he is asking. But that is what he is into it out of pocket so that is where he started. His wife is giving him grief about the money and time he spent on it. And now that it may be a money loosing thing he is in deeper do-do with her.

When he first came to me I advised him to not worry about the looks and just get it running reliably and he could have it for another two decades. I guess I am just to practical, but I can't see any value in prettying up a car. Especially one that is going on the road. I think that if you have the money and want to pretty up a car then you should put it under glass, take it to car shows, or get it's picture on a calendar. But there is too much exposure if you drive it daily - rocks and other cars hitting it and... and... and... I just wont saste my time worrying about looks - it is a never-ending uphill battle. He could never see that.

Anyway, that's the end of my rant.

You could almost balance a nickel on its edge on the engine when it is running. I've almost never heard one of these engines sound this good. It's not perfectly cherry but it's damn close.

I must be doing something wrong, then. Up until last year I haven't put a grand into my 81 300TD in the 10 years I have owned it. And 750 of that was to obtain a parts donor to get a replacement engine from. Of course I have "retired" enough of these cars to have three spare starters and alternators and Injection pumps. And last year I finally bought a "proper" full set of tires and had it aligned (but I replaced 2 marginally worn tie rod ends with good original parts from my parts car.) and got new front shocks. (Usually I have bought good used tires as needed. And one time I found a set of almost new tires on a fresh carcass at a PAP yard.)  Anyway all of this "new" tire business last year came to just under 700 bucks. So with the original purchase price of 700 I'm into this beauty about 2100 that I can point to. So lets say I cant account for another 300 and the total comes to $2400.  Not bad for a car I have used for 10 years. $240 a year is $20 a month. I do all my own work such as valve adjustments and oil changes and I had to replace the IP 3 years ago. When people ask me how I can afford to drive a Mercedes Benz I tell 'em I can't afford anything else. I can't imagine spending a grand a year on a car (no offense to those who can and do) and it still starts on the 5 degree Utah winter mornings with 2 cycles of the glow plugs or right away with the block heater and a half cycle of the plugs. I was thinking of selling it last year because it was getting boring to sit in the same car day after day for 10 years now. But then I got it safety inspected and it passed the first try. Then I felt bad and gave it an early oil change for even thinking that. Like I said in another post recently - I don't worry about the looks of a car - that is just good money and effort after bad to me. And like the Millenial Falcon she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts. It turned 366,000 yesterday and I will probably have it till it explodes, implodes or just gives up the ghost. At this rate I may die before it does. If so . . . you know what to bury me in.

Since purchasing my (2) 1983 300d's I have probably put over $5-10K in each of them. That is just the nature of keeping a good car running like a champion. I don't mind putting $1K per year in each one. After all, I don't have car payments, my insurance is cheap, and I get to play at being a backyard mechanic.
