[diesel_mercedes] Re: W123 240D Vacuum leak, then no vacuum at all.

Thanks everybody for the ideas. Once my leg is better, I will have to start doing some testing and replacing some vacuum tubing!

[diesel_mercedes] Newbie with purchase question

Hello All

I am planing on buying two 1980's 300 turbo diesels. (One is for my wife.)

The plan is to use them as daily drivers, on waste oil, with a newer car as a backup vehicle.

There is a local 300SDL. Are parts much harder to find and more expensive than they are for the five cylinder cars?

thank you
Rodger

Sometimes there are coincidences, sometimes we knock things loose or break things, and sometimes stuff just happens. I would start with the last thing you fixed, changed, repaired, etc. and look for the problem

I replaced the left front headlight last Thursday, on Saturday the battery was dead. Charged and was fine Sunday and Monday. car died in the drive thru this am. Jumped it and will probably have to jump it to get home tonight. I put in a sylvania super bright twice the price bulb. $19 vs $9 for the cheap one.

Anyone think of a reason the new bulb would drain the battery? or just coincidence.
The alternator is a little over a year old.
The battery is 10 months old.

If the battery checks out ok at wally's, I guess I will take it in and have the mech check the alternator.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: battery/headlight/alternator

Chuck,

The light is a pretty simple circuit that glows when the battery is "charging" the alternator, instead of the alternator charging the battery.  If the light is OUT (dark) and the battery is connected, while the engine is running, that is an indication that the alternator is charging.

It sounds really silly, but it has happened in my benighted driving past that a "bad battery" was simply a battery low on water.  Always check that.  Always use only distilled water to top up the battery.

    Good luck on the hunt.

Thanks Tom,

Does the light glow if the regulator is bad? I will check on my drive tonight. I think I am praying for a bad battery. But I will check the wiring to the headlight, to see if I pinched, pulled, or otherwise caused a short.

It started in the AM, but not after I stopped for breakfast. I will say the lights, radio, and air were still on when I tried the restart. But the 40 miles at 70 mph should have charged the battery even more. I will check and report back tomorrow.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] battery/headlight/alternator

Is the red 'charge' indicator light on the dash binnacle lighting?  If not, the alternator is charging.

So it sounds as if you must have a drain somewhere.  The Sylvania super brite bulbs aren't your problem - I run those and they are just conventional bulbs.  As long as the circuit shuts off, they cause no drain.  IF the circuit doesn't shut off, they stay lit, so you would see it.

If it is draining while parked, that also doesn't suggest an alternator problem.

With the car off, you can pull the fuses.  See which one sparks as you take it in and out.  That indicates a 'hot' circuit (drain on the battery).  That may help you figure out what's happening.

You may discover that a wire has worn through and is draining the battery.  Depends on the age of the car and maintenance (which you didn't mention).  Sometimes these things are obvious.  Sometimes they would flummox Houdini.
