I changed to quick glow plugs years ago. I just kept the old timer relay. I
just count to ten and start. Leave it on longer for cold days. Maybe 15
seconds. The relay is now coming on while the car is running(also sometimes
doesn't light at start & I have to hit the box under the dash to get it to turn
on) and that causes the alternator belt to slip and squeal. Sometimes I can rap
the box under the dash to stop it. Is there a plug in replacement for the relay
that works with the old 77 system but times out for the fast glow plugs? I know
what I'm doing isn't exactly the approved method but it's worked for years. Can
you replace a resistor or capacitor in the box to change the timeout? Also is it
possible I can take the box apart and clean the contacts and maybe replace a
spring or whatnot to rebuild it? Related to the squealing I have welded my
alternator bracket three times. I think it took this time but when it squeals I
have noticed it re-cracking. Can you still get these brackets? Lawrence
Rhodes......

[diesel_mercedes] Parts & Repairs

Every six months I take pictures of what I have accumulated for my two 1983 w123 300d's because I forget what I have stashed. Here are the latest pics. Most of the stuff is for me, but if you are desperate for something you see, let me know. Also, I seem to remember other things that I have that are not shown - see I told you the memory slips now and then.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Glow plug options, rebuild? 1977 240D Also Alternator bracket.

On my old 77 240, someone had used a Ford type relay for the glo-plugs. They put a toggle switch on the dash. I did what you do, just gave it about 10 seconds or so. I never had any problems with it. Come to think of it, I have one of those relays on my truck to run the sno plow pump. I guess you can use them for just about anything. Max

Brinson sometimes has good prices on parts like that.

http://www.brinsonco.com/

or look here

http://www.rmeuropean.com

search for your car then fast glow plug kit $118 includes four new glow plugs plus relay
