Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : W-126 Fuel Economy

Check this site out from Diesel Power Magazine about a 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 Dualie that is getting 30 mpg. The truck only used about $10.00 in parts so I am inclined to believe it. Basically, it is all about aerodynamics. Makes me want to invest in some duct tape so i can start taping up a lot of stuff.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Economy

It is definitely NOT true.  My 126 gets over 30 on road trips, heavily laden.  Around town, driving to Court, to P-a-P, to the pizza place, etc. is more in the 27-28 range, very consistently.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Klunk sometimes.

I'm putting my money on an engine mount.  My first '78 300D did the exact thing.  It was kind of a creek/squeek/ting sound when breaking hard, turning left, shutting down or starting up, and it went away after changing both side engine mounts.  It's nothing to worry about, not very hard to do.  expense would depend on whether or not you do it yourself as I did.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: advice

I agree with Brian, any difference in mpg plus or minus will be almost insignificant. Buy what you enjoy driving. My 300sd always gets 25-27 mpg, and the car rides best on the freeway at 85 mph, and being 6'3" it fits me.

No noise when stopped and revving the engine, right? Nothing loose up top, or bottom (e.g., muffler or drive train)? Just when driving, turning, stopping - and no wobble on your front wheels either?

I have a high pitched metal to metal knock or klunk when stopping the engine on
the 240D 1977.  Sometimes on a left turn.  Sometimes when stopping  Sometimes
when accelerating.  Always when turning off.  Is the test to put a jack under
the engine lift and see which mount seperates??  Is the third mount at the
transmission tail mount?  The noise is comming from the right front area.  I did
some doughnuts in the parking lot and I couldn't recreate the noise.  However I
am starting to worry.  Lawrence Rhodes.......
