Bogy,
Strange, on the '85 722.416 CA Trannys, the oiler was part of the main tranny body, and only one the speedo gears was attached to the tail. I only had to replace the tail and move over the the oil dripper and shaft speedo gear, when I swapped trannys. I added some pics of the innards. Hey, if yours works, you're all good.
I might have to do this again, as I'm planning on getting the original tranny rebuilt this summer, and will need the tail off the current tranny, which still works, but isn't in good shape. I'm keeping the car within the 100 Mile AAA tow zone. Sadly, I not driving the MB up North anymore, or at least until the Tranny and axle are sorted.

No, they are not. the mechanical speedo tail has an oil tube that is fed through a passage that is cast into the main casting and passes through the gasket to the tail section. The oil tube lubricates the mechanical speedo gears. There is no counter surface on the electronic speedo tail section to block the flow of oil from this passage. But it would have been nice if there was. Also, the electronic speedo has a 4 vained part just inside the tail section that the sensor detects as the vanes pass by. The vanes are steel so that they can be detected. There is no such construct in the mechanical speedo version. There are a few other problems that I would have had to solve and it was just too much work. So I came up with this idea and now I have my car back. I could have used it without the speedo/odo. But it would have been too annoying to deal with the always not knowing how fast you are going. Besides, I wanted the accumulated mileage to keep accumulating accurately. I have 384,000 miles on this old girl. I was frankly surprised that it works with a 1/4 inch gap. But that should help with the centrifugal force problem which I don't really think is going to be a problem at all.
FWIW, I suspect that the problem with the original box was just that the rear pump had lost its suction and couldn't pull in oil in order to develop pressure proportional to the speed, which the tells the rest of the valve body when to shift. Since it wasn't shifting out of first gear I think that is all that was wrong. I intend to look into it later this summer. I am not about to throw an otherwise perfectly good slushbox away without a fight. The original was a 722.303 which is the beefiest slushbox they made and was only installed in the wagons and CD models. Since I don't push this lady that hard I have no reason to think this one will fail simply because it can't take as much torque. But I would like to put the original back in if at all possible.
The replacement tranny came with a 300D sedan, another non working transmission, a non working turbo engine and a working n/a 5 banger. I hope to use the N/A 5 banger and this "new" tranny in a jeep someday, (if I can get the original one working and put back in the wagon) and I want to put the 300D body on a small 4X4 truck frame, mostly for the fun of it. The early Ford rangers have a very compatible wheel base.
TMI?

Are the tails not transferable? They are for the '85Neat work around though.

I had to replace the tranny in my wagon and could only find a tranny with a mechanical speedo. My wagon had an electronic one. So I built this modification. see the pix. I know it's not perfect and I do have some concern for the effect of centrifugal force on the fingers. But it is .1 inch thick material and I had a dickens of a time bending it properly so I left a 1/4 inch gap between the fingers and the sensor and it still worked. The sensor is encased in heat shrinkable tubing which covers the end which is sealed with a piece of plastic bottle cap trimmed to fit.
As always comments welcome.
