I've put a lot of money into my '92 300D, more than I could possibly recoup in a sale. I expect I'll do the same with the '86 190D I just acquired. What that gets me is a pair of cars that are timeless in looks, reliable as a hammer and get 36 and 41mpg highway. Best of all, they're paid for; the sleazeball bankers aren't getting any interest money from me and over the long haul, I'll spend a lot less on cars. I'd like to think someone would gives these old ladies a home when I'm gone in 20 years.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Remember when auto transporter companies were reliable and trust

I paid $1100 to get a 190D from Raleigh, NC to Seattle. Not too unreasonable given the price of diesel but when it got here there were 52 more miles on it than when it was loaded on the truck plus all four tires were flat spotted. AA Auto transport brokered the deal and Rollover Transport was the carrier.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Heater box?

OK, I'm not so well-versed on the W201 chassis, BUT, hot air out of the defrost vents is the default, "limp-home" mode on the earlier cars (W116, W126, W123).  When the system fails, for any reason, defrost is the one function that is most needed for safety's sake.

My guess is that you have a control/servo problem.  Not nearly the expense or trouble getting into as the heater box/heater core.

I would look at whatever electronic control box this system has, perhaps a heater control valve/servo unit, or even the buttons themselves.  Perhaps what you need could be found here:

Specifically, the "AC & Heater Control Valve", the "AC Control Unit" or the "AC/Heater Control Switch".

Best of luck, JD.

I get hot air out of the defrost and front vents regardless off settings. There's apparently some vacuum issues but when vacuum is applied from an external source the blend doors don't move and they're stuck at full heat. I just got the car recently and there are a few questionable "repairs" to figure out. My mech says he's never seen a heater box go bad but warned that it was sold as a rather pricey entire assembly. We still have a lot of diagnosis to go through but trying to stay ahead of the curve in the event of a worst case scenario.
