Have you tried a good, old-fashioned "Italian tune-up"?

I am having similar experience with my 4 cylinder. It was very dirty when I first drove it. It started hard and there was quite a bit of smoke. I was scared that it had a burnt valve. And, it was noisy. It's improved in stages as I first changed the filters, then ran one type of cleaner after another through it. Now I have consistent good power good starts and the engine sounds a lot more normal at idle. One other thing I went through was, when I changed the glow plugs to pencil-type, I found one burnt out one and I had a bit of struggle pulling it out. The prechamber must have been very fouled with carbon and it was actually wet. I think that is the cylinder that has had to do most of the cleaning up. almost all of the lope is gone and sometimes it goes away altogether.
I think if I continue to run it and add cleaner with each tankful, it will eventually finish cleaning up. I wonder if the prechamber nozzles were coked up and they are beginning to clear out.-- Mark L. Bardenwerper, Sr. Technology...responsibly, thoughtfully
