I am having similar experience with my 4 cylinder. It was very dirty when I first drove it. It started hard and there was quite a bit of smoke. I was scared that it  had a burnt valve. And, it was noisy. It's improved in stages as I first changed the filters, then ran one type of cleaner after another through it. Now I have consistent good power good starts and the engine sounds a lot more normal at idle. One other thing I went through was, when I changed the glow plugs to pencil-type, I found one burnt out one and I had a bit of struggle pulling it out. The prechamber must have been very fouled with carbon and it was actually wet. I think that is the cylinder that has had to do most of the cleaning up. almost all of the lope is gone and sometimes it goes away altogether.
I think if I continue to run it and add cleaner with each tankful, it will eventually finish cleaning up. I wonder if the prechamber nozzles were coked up and they are beginning to clear out.

[diesel_mercedes] Hard Starting Etc.

Hi Mark ;

You're late to this party else you'd know all about Nate's sad, ridiculous and pathetic story of fungus infestation so bad it resulted in the car lurching to a halt once on a Sunday morning in front of a Chinese Church on a major Blvd. just as they were all coming out .....

I _should_ have yanked the fuel tank and cleaned it my own damnself years ago when first I bought the car but I didn't fully appreciate how bad it was then I dug my heels in and now I couldn't remove the fuel tank if my life depended on it....

The good (?) news is : I can change the fuel filter faster than any Indy 500 Pit Crew and there's finally no miniature coal looking chunks in the clear plastic intake screen so just maybe (don't make book on anything involving Nate and dirty fuel)  I'm getting to the end of it .

MAYBE .

FWIW, I keep the valves in proper adjustment and so on so the engine rarely makes more than a 3/4 before spinging into life and the smoking that bedeviled me for several years stopped when I changed out the injection pump earlier this year .

Low fuel lamp on to stay @ 380 miles, made it to 420 miles and used 18 + gallons filling it, fuel mileage dropped to 22.4 MPG but I also flat footed it some (100 + MPH) and swerved like a drunken sailor to loosen up more silt from the bottom of the tank ~ seems to have worked as the paper filter was black again .

Silver bottle Diesel Kleen used .

Demarkis accompanied me to the Propel filling station on PCH at the harbor freeway, helped me change the filter and check the oil before filling the tank .

He was pleased to be allowed to watch for leaks as the clear plastic micronic element filter filled when I re started the engine .

Most of to - day it ran smoothly at hot idle, the various swerving to and fro put an end to that but the lopey idle isn't terrible, just annoying .
