Re: [diesel_mercedes] New Tires for 83 300 CD

Tire discussions have abounded in this group over the years. My 2 cents = unless you are driving abnormally (climbing mtns, off roading, on the autobahn daily), go with the mfg recommended size and quality. They paid those German Benz engineers well to come up with optimum round town sizes. This from a 70 year old who always ran odd sizes on other vehicles for various reasons.

I would like to hear recommendations for new tires for my car. i wanted tires with the following size 205 70 14 , but the selection is very limited. I am considering the Michelin hydro edge, yes they pricey and only available in 195 70 14.

thanks

That is the tire I have fitted to my 300SD, but in 195 70(?) 15. I recommend them. Wet and dry traction are better than average, not much better than anything else in snow, ice and mud.  90K tread wear guarantee, had mine for going on three years, still no sign of wear.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Finally!

Fun, isn't it, Ben!! You read about my exploits dropping the rear end, axles wheel bearings etc. I've done some work on 4 wheel vehicles but mostly simple stuff...never as involved as I've gotten into with the 300D. I've done a lot of work on 2 wheelers so the basic skill set is there & with a FSM, some help from experienced friends on sites like this & a little common sense it's amazing what we can do! Good luck with your project.

Jeez Louise! Never done this in my life I must say. Any last words for a rookie about to rebuild the entire upper half of a OM617 with nothing but a FSM and a dream?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Doing some R&D need your help

I just typed in Mercedes 1983 300d w123 and got tons of hits, including this Wickepedia site which is very useful
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W123

If you have a different model or year, use your info.

It has been a long time - but your VIN number has a lot of info for you (where and when it was built, what it is, etc). There are databases available too. And, try Wickepedia. Search your model and year and you will find a lot of information. Get the Haynes manual too. And use Google a lot. Many ways to find the information you are after.

Is there anywhere I can look up the block numbers to see what was put in this car in has a four speed tranny that I figure is stock. From what I have found it should be a three speed auto, not a four speed. I found this set of numbers,(617 912 12 077612) dose this tell me if it has any thing or is it just the number of the one build that day back in 1979.

I earlier wrote on this topic that a one-time poster here, and acknowledged MB diesel guru, known as "Stretch", installed a turbo on a four-cylinder 240D.  Indeed, one of the things he did was to machine the holes in the block to drop in the piston cooler jets.  He did that because none of the four-cylinder cars ever had a turbo, and so neither the piston coolers, and he wanted to prove a 240D could be turbocharged without sacrificing reliability, if done correctly.  I doubt he would ever have considered installing piston cooler jets into a normally aspirated five-cylinder block in order to turbo it; there're just too many turbo-engines out there for cheap that are already properly set up.

But, to answer your question:  Yes, the normally aspirated and turbo blocks have the same crankshaft journals and oiling passages, but for the piston cooling jet holes.  In fact, the journals are even shared with the 240D....

So, what's wrong with this parts engine?

The 300D engine I have would it have the same oil journals board in it as the turbo engine I have found good parts so far I have a great running engine just trying to see if I can work with what I got, or keep up the R&D I have found a parts engine I can get all the stuff I may need to turbo this running car, well good luck with your projects. Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Finally!

I've heard various things I "need" to do first in regards to cleaning
out the head bolt holes in the block (like getting the oil and crap out)
and I want to clean the pistons and block top as good as I can prior. I
was AMAZED how clean the block was. I could still read the numbers
painted on the passenger side, below the turbo. No oil anywhere.

! YAY ! .

I'm sure you'll do just fine Ben .

Be _SURE_ to print out the cylinder head torque diagram and _FOLLOW_IT_ ! the order in which you tighten the bolts is critical .

I , personally use an old racing trick on every engine : I snug up the bolts then I begin torquing them down in 5 # increments ~ yes this is time consuming *but* it draws the head to the block *perfectly* evenly.....

I hope that putting a fresh head against old piston rings , doesn't wind you up with oil leaks from a pressureized crankcase ...

Of course , you already have ALL the various sized O-Rings for the oil tube seals ? there's a bunch of that crap that leaks like the devil and is easy to change now with the manifolds off , not so much once it's buttoned up , just ask Tom .

Hi Nick ;

If you have the receipts for the recent works and parts , the insurance co. is required to add that amount to the writeoff value...

BT , DT , they still junked my car but I kept it and rebuilt it anyways .

You can take it to a professional vehicle appraiser and spend a few $ to have it appraised , this should also include the recent expenses and will help leverage the ins. co to fix it .

I don't mind salvage titles but it can be difficult to get collision coverage on one , be aware .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Easter Sunday

FWIW ;

I was flushing the cylinder block with the thermostat housing removed , every time I hooked up my auxiliary water pump harness , that's when the foamy crud came roaring out of the opening ~ .

I've been trying to talk Tom into ordering up several hundred $'s worth of new hoses and seals etc. so we can do this once & for all , remembering all the not fun I had with my cars when I bought them .

I also collected yet another bunch of " Just So " original Mercedes hose clamps @ P-A-P and his car has almost all matching size & correct hose clamps on it again...

I too was thinking the used thermostat was bad & stuck open but since we didn't have a new special O-Ring , I didn't want to pry it loose from the housing...

We saved his old one and will use it when he gets a big boxfull of new parts...
