Re: [diesel_mercedes] Wagon Seat Belts

Nate et.al.

I don't remember balking about giving you better photos. In fact I believe I sent them post haste and forthwith.
They were, of course, the very back most seats as in the seats that fold down and face toward the rear window.
If you didn't get the pictures I will resend them.

Second I have a single sheave alternator as well.
In fact I have 3 of them. And If could find the missing the single pulley I would have 4 of them.
How many sheaves do you want? 2?

Bogy.

. . .

? Anyone have a single sheave alternator
pulley ? . I need one or two, should be the same as most
anything if you have an old alternator lying around you
don't need .
Bogy said he had Wagon seat belts for me
but balked when I asked for decent photos so I'm still
out there looking  n case anyone finds a W123 wagon of
any year, I can clean them up and I'd rather dismount
them my own self .

TIA,

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator Choices W123

That's what I have coming in the mail, a Bosch rebuilt AL117X

The alt I'm replacing is a Bosch rebuilt from 10yrs and 100,000 miles ago.

Should be here this week, so I'll try to swap it out this weekend.

The original 55 Amp. one is the AL80X, not very popular these days .

A 65 Amp. direct replacement is AL117X, you use your old pulley and this one fits various Mercedes up to the 1992 year model so it should be cheap to find  a good used one and slap in a new BOSCH brand regulator and be off to the races with brighter lights and better charging, best of all it fits the original brackets .

I expect to install one of these on an OM617 engine very soon so maybe wait to make sure I know what I'm talking about before $pending any Lolly .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Poor Fuel Economy '82 240D Slushbox

Maybe late cam timing would show up as lack of power; maybe not.  And what does lack of power look like in a 240D?

You had and drove this car extensively before the rebuild, so, you know how it was then.  I'll give you that.  And if it's not now any lower on power than it was before, then, cam timing may not be an issue.  Still, it wouldn't hurt to check it.

I'd bet that most of the engines owned by this group have late cam timing, caused by timing chain stretch.  And owner's just accept the performance of their cars as: "Oh, it's an old diesel.  That's how they are."

At 335,000 miles, I bumped up the timing on my '79 SD by 5 degrees, and really woke up the engine.  It ran well before; no smoke, adequate power, started in below zero degree Fahrenheit.  Fuel mileage was decent (23-24 mpg), but I realized another 2 -3 mpg after the advancement.  I'm going to check the timing on the TD engine before it goes into the Jeep (hopefully in the next two weeks....)

It starts *instantly* and has good power and zero smoke .

I noticed it maybe shifts up later than it did before, could late shifting be causing the engine to run higher than normal RPM's and waste that much fuel ?

Max ;

If it's leaking slowly there's a dye refrigerant you can add when charging it up, then you'll hopefully _see_ the dye wherever it's leaking / weeping and can -maybe- fix that .

I was told the other day that using later model W126 receiver/dryers and expansion valves changes them to O-Ring seals, usually much less leaky over time .

Rob, yes, there's a relay I forget where but just see if the compressor works, use your teat light to check if it has power to one of the two leads on it and ground the other, it will begin to run, be aware you'll grind it to dust in short order doing this is the coolant level is too low but it's a useful basic YES/NO test .

Keep us posted, O.K. ? .

Good luck on that one. I gave up on my 240's ac, after replacing most everything. When it worked it worked really good. My problem was a  slow leak everytime. First time it lasted 2 years, then one year, then just part of the summer. I got tired of that and got a new car, ac works great. Max  P.S still have my 2 -240's to sell. Its hard to sell cars from the side of a mountain 100 miles to the nearest big city(Spokane)

Hi,

My AC quite the other day, and I'm not sure if the compressor has gone,
or just isn't getting a signal from the controller.

Is there an easy way to test the compressor?

Every once and awhile, I've had the AC not work one day and be fine the
next, so I thought it might start working again, yet it hasn't.

I tried bypassing the low pressure switch to see if it had leaked, yet
the compressor didn't engage.

I heard the '85 has another control box under the hood too.

Thanks

Rob
