Sears has the slotted screwdriver (largest ?#12). But you can also grind a slot in an existing old big screwdriver, or I have even taped two small drivers off center a bit. Lot of ways to skin a rabbit on this one.

Well there was a snap and then I heard something fall inside of the door. When I got the panel off I found out that one is not a rivet at all but the inside of the door pocket that slides into a space, that should of just been lifted up and out of the hole. O gee. When I got up to my two parts car, both of them were broken too. It's the kind of deal where if you don't know, you learn by breaking the part. At least I was not the only guy to break one. I was able to fix mine with a sheetrock screw and a beadboard foam washer screwed in from the backside. Also at the same time my glovebox door would not stay shut so I've taken that out and have discovered I need a slotted screwdriver sort of tool to get the door apart.Never seen one of those . Mercedes comes up with some interesting stuff. Hey Rob , you ever heard of a car club in Garden Grove called the relics?Max

Pop out the crappo radio & look for a yellow wire unused .

Jumper this wire to the hot , red power lead or the battery & listen for the antenna motor to whirr for 12 seconds .

If it does m you're in luck .

if it doesn't , don't panic , it just takes more time to fix .

I have a few I sell cheaply and working antennas too , gotta go now, quitting time ,more trunk access details to - morrow .

Remove the ash tray then the twp # 2 phillips headed screws holding the ash tray retainer in place , _gently_ lift it out a bit & unplug it , then put your hand into the hole palm _UP_ & grasp the rear edge of the radio , wiggle as you pull it to - wards you , _STOP_ as soon as you can see the wires and CAREFULLY grasp each wire's plug & wiggle it loose ~ pulling the wires proper will teach you how to swear like I do , not a good thing .

The " Automatic " button is to hunt for stations , the antenna switch is separate on the Facia above the radio .

DO NOT be in any hurry to discard it ! adding better speakers & an amplifier will allow you to blast crappy loud music with *perfect* clarity & so pi$$ off me and all the other grumpy old people .

Or , to get back at the kid next door by playing your Pre - War Blues or Count Basie tapes at top volume , drowning him out .

It was a long bed , had a clutch and the tags & SMOG test were due 7/30 , this was $ I'd never see again and I can use the tax credit , no one wanted to buy it so off it went .

...Even a blind squirrel finds a nut....

I've been continuing on the ' Might As Wells ' on SWMBO's '82 240D , I had both front doors apart last night and by the time I was done , the central locking seemed to work O.K. & the engine stopped *instantly* when I turned off the key so I stopped . (I'd replaced both inside door pulls with new ones and hand scrubbed the interior door panels whilst they were off and replaced one cracked map pocket just for good measure )

I drove it to work to - day and 9 hours after I'd parked it , I had to open the driver's door ~ imagine my pleasure as I saw the other doors unlocking =8-) .

I puttered around washing the windows etc. and when I was done , Lo ! they all locked up automatically again too .

Wow , I'm stoked , I think she'll be pleased too .

Maybe replacing all those rubber 'Y' vacuum connectors was a good idea after all .(they're hidden under the floor , in the trunk etc.)

I ordered up the new fuel filler flap actuator from The Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine , Ca. and once I have that it'll be pretty much all done .

It's interesting that since we got a 2011 VW TDI automatic our driving
habits have changed. The TDI has a fuel consumption read out in real
time. What we have noticed is shorter shifts and no acceleration except
when necessary produces the greatest results. I try to transfer that to
the 83 240D when I drive it and it does produce results.

Just as Brian said, the 123 300Ds normally get about 25mpg for highways,
less for city.
They're a pre-wind tunnel, "square block" design, so not as good on
mileage as the later cars.

Sounds like your social skills may be still suffering from the after effects as well. I don't do road trips very often and when I do I like to use the opportunity to see what I can wring out a gallon of diesel. 36.4 mpg certainly isn't the something I see all the time but it's not out of the realm of possibility with the right conditions, technique and consciousness. Thanks for your carefully considered input.

My wife is the one with the lead foot but her commute is all interstate so she gets better numbers than I do driving the same car in my real estate practice. I get better mileage on the highway than she does because I'm a bit more conscious of driving technique.
