[diesel_mercedes] Re: Glow plug removal

All plugs should have that "aluminum looking thing" on the buss bar connector. It's the nut. There should be a slot in the top (side) of the nut which is offset from the centre line. You should be able to get a screwdriver in there and loosen it up. Then a deep socket to go in over the entire plug and unscrew the whole plug. They usually come easier if they are hot, so if possible, run the engine and get it warm. Then there is the unpleasantness of working on a hot engine, so using gloves is a good idea. On the ponton OM621 version of that engine (up to 1961) a wrench could be used because there is a little different intake set up.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Glow plug removal

Some manufacturers of glow plugs used a knurled nut – not a hex nut.

If it is not a hex nut, try vice grips.  Make a sketch or take some

pics so you know how those wires are to be arranged when you assemble

it back together.

It is the tiny 8mm nut on the outside part of the glow plug that holds the wire on

You may have broken glow plugs in the middle if the nut closest to the block is not there.

Here is a google search about this subject.  Bill in Oregon

I got the first and last nuts off but the middle two glow plugs don't have nuts....it's like an aluminum ring and I have tried using a pair of pliers without luck. Is there a trick?
