[diesel_mercedes] Smooth As Silk Again

Tom came by to - day with some cleaners and I broke out my Pop Tester and tested all seven of his Junk Yard injectors, not a one was any good at all and several were appallingly bad .

Then I dug out my box of Junk Yard injectors and tested all of them, was able to make a set of five decent (good spray patterns, pop between 130 ~ 133 BAR, no droolers)  for his '81 300SD that's been sidelined for most of this year due to excessive smoking , hard starting and poor idling .

I also gathered up a set of seven near new BOSCH (France) glow plugs as I know at least two of his glow plugs are bad .

It turns out some of the injectors I'd collected had been rebuilt or shop overhauled at previous times ~ one was a VW/Audi (!) that had the incorrect BAR number covered with a printed band, another was God alone knows what , many different brands of vehicles use BOSCH fuel injection systems so you *can* swap the nozzles, shims and springs to make them work n whatever vehicle you're working on but I'm a picky Junk Yard dog and I really dislike mixed brand / number parts so I'll prolly trade them in on some rebuilts or something .

Of late the '82 240D has been idling poorly and smoking fuel at idling so I decided to yank all four injectors and test them and the four 240D injectors I bought in the Albuquerque Self Service Yard , all in my '82 were off spec. , two were droolers with crappy spray patterns , two of the Albuquerque injectors were passable , two were horrible, no wonder the car had a freshly installed rebuilt starter motor and new glow plugs ~ I got those too .

Anyway , I took the best four injectors from my set of eight and installed them, replaced the dirty (yes,AGAIN) clear plastic fuel screen, primed the system and fired it and  and Lo ! it idles smoothly again , has vastly improved throttle response and best of all : MORE POWER ~ always a good thing when working with a low power (? 50HP ?) four cylinder engine .

I'm jazzed to say the least, SWMBO's car should now get better fuel economy and not stall on the cold starts as it's been doing occasionally for several months now .

Don't think I'm done here yet 'cause I'm not ~ none of yhe turbo injectors pops @ the correct 135 BAR and the NA injectors all pop slightly under 115 BAR .

They have to be *perfect* for the car to run really sweetly .

I know a guy who'll clean and shim me a set of my old injectors to within 5 # of each other, I need to collect some more cores before I do this .

Miserably hot and humid in Los Angeles to - day but I'm pleased with the works done =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Slushbox

This is the last of the desert tankfuls , some AC use, not much .

Startron added, the filter was clean and full of clear fuel when I hit the road last month so somewhere in the South Western Desert I got bad fuel .

533 miles, 27.7 MPG , mostly Highway/Freeway driving .

I replaced the ding-dang intake screen 'cause the screen proper was black and the fuel was black as Coffee too dammit .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 77 Mercedes

Well you got your moneys worth.  However if you look on Craigslist you might find one.  I think I paid only a couple hundred dollars to buy the transmission in your car.  I then put it in myself in my garage. It came from Utah and the shipping was about the same as the cost of the transmission...cheap..  You might try getting on the diesel_mercedes@yahoogroups.com list and query someone there.  I however am out of the diesel veg thing.  Did it for more than a decade and now run a Nissan Leaf which I hope you will embrace.  Yes it does take some planning but it is cheaper by far than the Mercedes to run.  Much cleaner too.  Very dependable.  Low service cost.  I have gone to San Diego three times with it as a network of fast chargers is now in place.  I paid 14k for mine and got 0% loan from Nissan and am paying 250 for 5 years for it.  It had 2,600 miles on it and was like brand new. A 2013 model.  Lots of good deals out there for electric since the 200 mile models have made the 100 mile models go down in price.  Most under 10k if you look.  Anyway enough preaching.  It's not hard to take out the parts that can be resold but alas the demand for veg is way down.  Everyone is in gas euphoria or going electric.  David Phan is one mechanic you might talk to.  You can get your model for next to nothing now if you can find a good one.  Let me know if I can help further.  How many miles on it when it went South?  400k?  Lawrence

Hey Lawrence!

It is with a heavy heart I'm reporting that the 77 240D I bought from you threw the timing belt & is now toast. I wanted to reach out for any advice before I scrap her - if you know anyone with a W123 engine who's interested in a body to put her in, the transmission is really strong & we just replaced the brakes, brake booster & recently the radiator. We'd also like to pull out the Plant Drive to sell to anyone looking for that at the very least.

Cheers & thanks,
Francesca
