[diesel_mercedes] hard starting

 

One thing that surprised me when I "had to replace my dead battery" was
that the glo plugs were apparently getting hotter. It started better
but not because of improved cranking. Check the actual voltage at the
plug as your glo plugs heat!!!! Also, pull the glo plug harness and
check each contact for ground to each glo plug from the plug contact.

[diesel_mercedes] 300D Hard Starting

 

83 300D hard starting. May start on first try, may take several. Outside temp does seem to make a difference.

Once started, runs outstanding. Will easily start again if still warm.

Changed glow plugs. Person I bought car from claimed to have cleaned the carbon from prechamber. About 50,000 miles since then.

Swaped glow plug switch with known working.

Adjusted valves.

Ran through 2 bottles of diesel clean, returning fluid really not that dirty.

New heavy duty battery.

New primer pump.

Good fuel flow from the tank.

Any ideas?

I played those games 4 or 5 years ago. Drilled my holes and all that stuff. Resolved all my "too hot" when I finally put a new radiator in, flushed everything out with a good citric acid flush, and keep MB coolant flowing. Have been rock steady on 83C (Mary) and 175F (Martha) ever since. BTW, 83C=175F.

Since it's not running hot , I'd leave the 'stat alone .

and he mentions an arrow or jiggle hole in the t stat.  Does that sound right?  I know when I replaced the t-stat(I thought I put Behr in) I didn't look for an arrow.  Now I'm second guessing what I did.  LOL

[diesel_mercedes] Cooling System Service 1979 300SD

 



Look underneath the water pump , there's a small weep hole ~ if you see any corrosion or even one drop of coolant in or around it , replace it now whilst you have it apart for service .

The alloy part where the by pass hose is weeping , will need some serious hand wire brushing once you have the hose off .

Thanks Nate. I took it out and drove her hard and never broke 100C. I did find a seep in the expansion tank seem and a seep around the bypass hose by the thermostat.

Am going to change all the hoses and tank. Scratching my head if I should change the water pump.

Mine does , she's worth it IMO .

I was able to find two cans of R-12 Freon for $30 so I guess I'm good to go .

Tom suggested I up grade the Delco R4 compressor to a Sanden but that's $300 + I don't really have .

The sun was out , it was a nice day , not much of a crowd .
