Re: [Diesel-RVs] What weather program to use ??

I use the 1-ClickWeather extension with the Firefox browser. It gives
weather for the next few days from weather.com down at the bottom of the
browser.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Roll start

Steve,

We may have a communication problem.

Do you have an automatic or stick shift?

The neutral safety switch is only installed on automatics.

If putting it in neutral works, congratulations on finding a solution.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

On their web site, they say 1200 RPM for the new models. It probably depends on the model you have and how old it is.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

Our Maytag at home uses a DC motor as well. But in the house it doesn't mean much. They increase efficiency further by spinning the clothes at 800 RPM so they are nearly dry when you move them to the dryer.

Do you have any idea what the spin cycle speed is on the Splendide?

The problem with the Splendide machines are that they are Direct Current ( DC ) controls and motor. Therefore you have to take Alternating Current ( AC ) and change it to Direct Current to operate the machine. DC motors are not as efficient as AC motors. Chuck B

Same thing happened to ours. Control board fried, unfortunately it is in the back on the bottom so you have to take the machine out of where it is installed a real pain for my 03 Revolution.

I had the same thing happen where the dial kept going around, what the
problem turned out to be was a loose wire connection which I had to take the
top off the unit to inspect the wiring to find. The code for this problem
was the red light would blink 13 times

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Tow mode

Use the tow mode. If you drive up a hill in high gear, notice the
position of the throttle. Drop down a gear and quite possible your
throttle will come up a bit using less fuel. Let your transmission
work for you. That's what gearing is all about. It's also much easier
on the transmission.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] fuel filter joys

I got so excited reading all the fuel filter posts I decided to change mine on the car I have not done much with. It was dark and cruddy but not bad. I noticed some of the braided fuel lines to the injectors was weepy so I will replace those too.

The reason for this post is this - when I started pumping the primer, I got squirts of diesel coming back on my hand. So, I'm going to replace the primer pump too. But, with an old plastic twist knob, or with a new power jobbie?  Is the latter really worth the extra $20? Any of you installed a new model?  Either way, I hear they are a bear to get out unless you are an anorexic midget with itty bitty fingers, and I a large chunky fellow with fat fingers.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

We just spent close to $500 to get our repaired, for this same
reason! It started out just being the final cycle and then moved
to other cycle too. For a while, I could wash on the regular cycle
and then switch to one of the other options to spin!
We had pebbles in the water pump! Go figure!
The W/D needed to be removed from the coach so the RV guy could take
it to his shop to trouble shoot. It appears it could have been the
timer, the pump or some circuit board. The RV guy had to take the
doors off of the cabinet to remove it. Next he had to take out the
driver's captain chair and go out the driver's side door. It would
not fit thru the regular door. He also told me, for the coaches with
no driver door, they have to take out the windshield to get the w/d out!
Anyhow, after cleaning the pump, mine is working great!

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

depending on how old the splendide is (did it come with the Amer.Trad?),
may be un-repairable....worn....
hard to find place to fix anymore (there is one somewhere around Ocala FL...
may be a few repair places elsewhere)...
Camping Worlds now generally don't repair, they just replace --by time pay
labor, taking in/out/etc...you could buy new one anyways probably....

had this happen? Any suggestions?

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Moving to Full-Timing

what works for us...fulltime since 1997 (first in 40' fifthwheel..then 40'
Dutch Star Diesel now on second diesel pusher--42 foot motor home with
Harley on lift on back towing Dakota 4x4)...am regretting going bigger than
the 40 foot in way--some places harder to get into (doesn't sound like a
lot, but makes a difference)
Have not regretted fulltime RV living...over ten years in confined
space...man, woman, big yellow cat, pomeranian.....and we haven't "killed
each other" yet!
maybe this will hit some of your "high spots"...direct email is always
welcome
charli@strato.net if questions-- I think we've corresponded before...

--we use laptop/internet to keep in touch, and to pay bills and do banking
and have had great success with the simple (for us) Verizon Broadband air
card that gives us 24/7 internet access for $59 a month. (the little bit of
non-coverage is
not worth worrying about...but we don't go to Canada, Mexico or any far off,
high altitude etc places)....some people like the sat.dishes/fancy expensive
hookups/the systems that require cellphones and antennas and all that
"stuff"
weike being able to slap a credit card size gizmo in the side of our laptop
and saying "I'm on the internet".... to each his own.

-- we do like the in motion satellite (and have Direct TV with our east and
west networks etc)...it is particularly handy when running from Florida
hurricanes etc.

--Our Dutch Star DP was 40 foot...now have Mountainaire DP 42 feet (the
motorcycle lift for the Harley adds about 3 feet...so, make that "45" and
tow Dakota 4x4 quad cab pickup.
--chassis: we've owned Spartan and Freightliner (now)--but its the big
Freightliner
not the size under Winnebagos, etc...we have the heaviest chassis they make
under the MADP--so, far the big FL is about equal to the Spartan
Mountainmaster we had on the Dutch Star....
--slides, I might have two in the bedroom along with the dining/living
slide, but DEFINITELY NOT a slide on passenger side in LR (can knock your
head off when try to go in bays--makes hard to get to freezer too)--
wouldn't mind a Prevost with
no slides...(:o)!
-- I think Cummins diesel and Onan generators (have powertech now--and boy
what a hassle getting generator fixed) -- experience with both Cum. & Onan,
easy to get serviced.

--can't advise on out of USA, we WON'T do that.

-- naturally, good CSP (ours is excellent-- it has already paid out about
$4000 since July)...some like to "self insure"... not us.
-- Good road service (ours is excellent--more than paid for itself several
years ago)
-- I wouldn't want tag axle, lose storage space, have to buy two more
tires...etc.
might give you better ride. 43 foot and bigger supposed to have tag.
-- our mail forward service has been excellent (former Mailboxes etc/UPS
store), gives us permanent address etc. (we're Florida residents)
--sold homes in NC - bought and sold two RV lots in central FL over the ten
years...
in process of selling (we hope), RV lot in Mission Texas (on way there now
to work on that).... just bought "perfect" (for us) lot in Mt.OliveShores
South in Polk City FL
(closer to friends, family, Tampa VA, and other things)
we do have some "valuables" in storage in Charlotte NC --need to do
something about all that.
-- campground memberships, we do like Passport America ... dropped Coast to
Coast, Escapees and some others--money burners.

If missed anything--let us know.... all this is "WWFU & IMO"

KarenB&JimB
Walmarting it in Wharton Texas
(just ate at new Chilis, shopped at WalMart etc
on way to Mission TX.... last nite, Camping World/Dixie RV on
I 12 near New Orleans)

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Moving to Full-Timing

DJ,

Several comments/answers:

1. I also use the internet extensively while full timing and have the
Verizon Air card for my laptop. In the past 3 years their coverage
has expanded greatly. I now get reception just about everywhere we
are. Including some way out places. I have had air card internet
connection where the cell phone had no signal. When I signed up with
Verizon was told I could suspend service on a monthly basis, if I
didn't need it.

2a. I've had MHs' on Freightliner/Cat and Sparton/Cummins both
excellent.
The Cat was 300HP 860 lbs of torque at cruise of 60mph I
averaged
about 8.6 mpg over 120,000 miles.

The Cummins ISL has only 26000 miles and is getting 7.8 mpg which
should improve after break in.

b. We went from 1 slide to 4 slides, DW is much happier with 4 and
going from 38' to 43'. Slide operation and realiability is a function
of the manufacturer.

c. The current MH has a TAG axle, which provides greater stability
and I think a better ride. With the TAG axle and 4 slides I have lost
storage area in the bays. MHs' are a trade off.

While we had a house I did my own oil changes/lube etc. Now full
timing I only handle the lube between oil changes. I have started
using Speedco and am very satisfied with them the last oil change/lube
was $160 and took 30 min.

After we sold our house we put those must keep items in storage with
PODS, every thing was just "stuff".

As for a finiancial transisition I don't share your apparently dark
view of the future unless the soicialists gain power.

[diesel_mercedes] Another Good Day's Work 2

Well today I spoiled my SD with shell rotella syntheic.5-45wt.
Boy she starts even faster, and man that stuff does get like regular
rotella when warm. I think I'll use this during winter months and
regular in the warmer times.
I got 40gals of wvo yesterday and prefiltered to 10 microns. This
morning being 14 degrees,it looked like you could walk on it.Right now
at 58 degrees it looks like applesauce.See yesterday it was still 100
degrees when I filtered. Now I see why folks buy heaters. No more mixing
for me.I'm going to buy that coolant heater whick wraps around my
FM100,then get fattywagon injection line heaters but some way put a
electric thermostat with it.I don't like the idea running full time at
over 220 degrees. this should be not over $140 for setup.

O yea, thats a given, at least after you try it once. Way too much
compression in 1'st. I use third gear on my hill. Max P.S. Nice picture
of Rose and her car. I think it would be cool if everyone could post a
picture so we can put faces with names. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Roll start

On my trip back home in my recently purchased 73 220D manual, the starter acted as if it had zero current running to it, after I filled the tank up with #2 at Bakersfield.  A guy who wanted the spot I was in came to help as he saw my dilemma. He had me drop it in second gear after pushing it 15-20 yards in a very busy gas station in front of bumper to bumper traffic.  Started perfect, maybe even fired up on the first rotation.  The guy said first gear is too much of a shock for the car, second is best. It reminded me of some of the easiest kick starts I have ever seen on a motorcycle.

If you have a four speed, then its just like anything else with a manual
for bump starting. I tried my automatic once on what I thought was a
good hill , didnt do nothing. But , wow, really good in the snow. You
should see my driveway, car is bank to bank, with some good hills, as
long as the snow is cold , no problems. My automatic wouldnt start
because of neutral safety switch and linkage issues. Bypassed it,
starts every time, not worried about starting in gear. Max

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Moving to Full-Timing

With respect to internet access, I prefer local wireless plus an air
card for internet access over a satellite system. Cheaper up front and
the technology is moving too fast for me to make the essentially $4000+
investment a satellite system requires. VPNs are easier also. With
investment in amplifiers, antennas and repeaters (well under $1000) one
can boost signals to tap a cell tower or wireless access point so often
you can be assured of 90% coverage throughout the US.

Now a satellite system is likely safer from a hacker that a local
wireless access system. However, if I were full timing and managing my
life savings online I would probably work something out with an online
hosting company to VPN to then and then do my business. Or set up a
cutout account where I could move money into with a phone call and then
manage it online...

RV size matters only to the individual. There are people that full time
in far smaller RVs.

Chassis really doesn't matter. 95% of your components are the same -
axles, brakes, transmission. Any competent truck repair shop can service
it. The importance is actually having it done. Ride quality is
subjective. You can have a soft ride and a coach that leans, yaws and is
harder to control. What kind of ride do you like in your car? I like a
feeling of competency in my ride quality which is why I have an Audi
quattro with a sport suspension for my favorite ride, and a Foretravel
with its 8 airbag outboard suspension for my RV.

Slides - again subjective. Slideouts can be problematic. Seal problems,
air/water leakage, actuators, control systems etc. But they give you not
only more room but the illusion of more room. Key is to get a better
coach as it will have better slides.

Tag axles - subjective again. All engineering is a tradeoff. A tag gives
you more carrying capacity and a more stable ride along with better
braking. Its also another axle to service, 2 more tires to replace, and
about a 3-5% mileage decrease.

CAT/Cummins - entirely subjective and a great way to start an online
argument of massive proportions. Each is a good engine which can be
serviced anywhere. Try to get the largest engine you can afford. DD60s
are a great engine too. All 3 will outleast you AND your coach with
proper service.

A lot of service could be accomplished on the road - but you would have
to carry all the 'stuff' you need. My M-11 has a 43 quart sump. With
essentially an annual oil change depending on how often you travel you
can stop in a Speedco and have it changed and lubed for a couple of
hundred dollars in less time than it takes for a shower. I would
advocate all maint other than oil changes/trans service.

As far as the rest goes, I would recommend you check out RV.net and
search there in several of their forums. Also escapees. These
discussions have been discussed there ad infinitum for several years and
their 60,000+ member means you will get a far more varied input.

I wish you well in your move - you have a lot of research and decisions
to make before you make the final leap. I would recommend you do some
research and buy a used motorhome first. Get the best older model you
can afford (Country Coach, Newell, Foretravel, Prevost, top of the line
Monaco etc) in the size you want and go camping as often as possible -
locally and 1 and 2 weeks trips.
Find out you are happy in close quaterters day after day and are ready
to make the leap into getting rid of all your 'stuff. You will find out
whether you really like it and what works for you with coach layout etc
etc. How it handles, rides etc etc.
We can give some advice, but the best advice I can give is to just get
out there and DO IT!

RE: [Diesel-RVs] Moving to Full-Timing

DJ

Lots of good questions!

1. I also am a heavy computer user. I am normally online several hours a
day, deal with hundreds of email daily, and do my banking online. Some RV
parks have WIFI, but many don't, and in many who do it doesn't work all that
great. I am using my Verizon cell phone and their "Broadband Connect"
feature for my normal internet connection. It gives me very close to DSL
speed most of the time. The cost is $59.xx per month. You can get virtually
the same Broadband service, at the same monthly cost, with an aircard. The
biggest difference is that you cannot "turn off" the aircard when you don't
want to use it for an extended period. If you are just using a tethered cell
phone ("tethered" via USB cable or Bluetooth), you can remove the Broadband
feature from your account so you are not being charged if you are where you
have good wifi for an extended period. That's how it works on Verizon. Most
of the other cell phone carriers have similar data plans.

2 c. Like you, I didn't really want a tag axle. We have a 40' DP on a
Spartan chassis, and no tag. Our UVW w/fuel is 27,665. GVW is 32,000. We
have ample CCC for all we need and then some. And we have a 10k towing
capacity. We do get a four-wheel weight from time to time just to be sure
the weight distribution is what it should be.

2 i. We have no home base. We distributed large furniture items to our three
children with the understanding we might want it back someday, if there is
anything left of it! We stored a few things the kids didn't want and the DW
thought she "had" to keep.

I would recommend that you buy the motorhome at least a year before you plan
to hit the road, and give it as much use as you can to get as many bugs as
you can out of it. RVs still are not perfect by any means, but most can be
kept going by a good do-it-yourselfer who pays attention to things, and who
practices good maintenance.

Enjoy the adventure!!

Subject: [Diesel-RVs] Moving to Full-Timing

Here is a few general questions for a fella (and his superior) who are
retiring into a MotorHome in the next 18 months. I hope that some of you
will be willing to share some honest and supported facts related to each.

First, my wife and I did live full time in our RV (a gas rig) back
when I was in my 30's. We traveled around and pretty much "had it"
with RV-ing because of the numerous troubles with that RV. So, we have the
basics down - - but now things have changed:

1. I need a computer now. It is not a want. We pay bills and I
move cash around using my computer here at home and on the road.

My question: is there smaller and less expensive satellite based
high-speed solution out there yet or is one coming? The huge dishes
I see are pricey and are often ground mounted. We don't watch TV on
the move so I can live with a separate dish that will seek a signal or allow
me to use a compass and elevation/azimuth specs.

2. We are moving up to a 40-footer. I know, many will say that is
either too big or small, but we know we can live with a 40 foot coach.

a. Which chassis, if you have owned more than a couple, is
the easiest to find service for and is the best ride?

b. Are there folks out there living with 2 or more
slide-outs and what are the pro's and con's of having more than 2 (such as 4
slides?)

c. What about tag axles? Any opinions. I would prefer to
not have a tag and a smaller/lighter/lower HP diesel.

d. For those of you who have owned BOTH the Cummins and
Cat power plants, which is cheaper/better/less hassle, etc. I can
live with opinions so long as they are fact-based...

e. Has anyone tried to perform their own maintenance on
the road and to what level have you achieved (oil changes?). I am a
self-maintainer for more than a couple of reasons.

f. Are there must-have accessories that are not on the
general usually-owned items? Such as Electronic, security systems,
etc.? What about often missed must-haves??

g. Have you full-timers been to Mexico or Canada or other
places for wintering and summering breaks. Where have you laid down
roots outside of the USA? We have our eyes on Mexico and I know this
is a huge subject but some general information would be great. We
have lived in several Latin Countries over the years so we have no fear of
Mexicans or other Latin folks and in fact really enjoy those cultures (we
lived in Spain and Portugal on our Honeymoon - - and stayed in France,
Austria, Germany and Italy for the winter months then).

h. Has anyone launched a full-timer life-style and then
regretted it completely? Meaning, maybe Mom got sick of the road or
you began to get tired of the lifestyle and ended it sooner than expected
and what were your reasons to return to RV-ing as a
hobby/recreation only? Include medical reasons and why treatment
was not possible away from "home."

i. This is a big decision: did you keep a "home base"
(down-sized) for your Rig? Did you keep a garage or storage and how
much did stuff did you keep, if any? I have read the gamut. Back
when we full-timed, I kept a car, two motorcycles, furniture and so on
because we were convinced we would own a home again. This time, we are not

more expensive to replace. I own a Whole house Genset, a
Diesel 4-wheel drive/PTO/Front bucket Tractor, and a Goldwing. Those
latter items would cost a bunch to replace later. However, this is a
teeter-totter thing. We want to full time for the right reasons
(right meaning, we want that lifestyle) but are going back and forth
with the "thing" thing. I meant that to be funny but really, I am
serious about down-sizing. We have already begun with selling three

If you look at the solenoid on top of the starter , there's two

If you try roll starting it , have a buddy push you in neutral up to

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Roll start

Check cables and going to starter.I added a extra ground from battery to the block.Check if she will start in neutral.I've heard the neutral safety switch is a maint. item.

If the location you park in has cell phone access, than one of the Air Cards
for internet access would be a good solution.

roots outside of the USA? We have our eyes on Mexico and I know this
is a huge subject but some general information would be great. We
have lived in several Latin Countries over the years so we have no
fear of Mexicans or other Latin folks and in fact really enjoy those
cultures (we lived in Spain and Portugal on our Honeymoon - - and
stayed in France, Austria, Germany and Italy for the winter months then).

h. Has anyone launched a full-timer life-style and then
regretted it completely? Meaning, maybe Mom got sick of the road or
you began to get tired of the lifestyle and ended it sooner than
expected and what were your reasons to return to RV-ing as a
hobby/recreation only? Include medical reasons and why treatment
was not possible away from "home."

i. This is a big decision: did you keep a "home base"
(down-sized) for your Rig? Did you keep a garage or storage and how
much did stuff did you keep, if any? I have read the gamut. Back
when we full-timed, I kept a car, two motorcycles, furniture and so on
because we were convinced we would own a home again. This time, we
are not sure but are nervous about getting rid of a lot of stuff that
will be way more expensive to replace.
We have already begun with selling three
of my four motorcycles and we are dumping the Jeep G.C. and so on. I
have a utility trailer with 4 wheels which is a beauty and that we
might keep for moving stuff later but that may be about it. We are
pretty much dumping our furniture except Grandma's old trunk (that
sort of thing). I have some electronics I will keep.....but, we are
heading in the direction of a full dumping of the stuff that we know
we can replace later.

That's enough for now. We have plenty of time to work this out. We
want to eliminate any emotional attachments. Her Mom and Dad are set
for now and my parents are gone. I have a great Brother and
Sister-in-Law who we will see a lot as time goes on. We hope to see
them yearly instead of every 5 years as it is now..and he retires in 3
to 6 years. That's one reason for freeing up from our home here.

Thanks for any input and little tidbits would be great. I am guessing
that there are others reading this who are bending in our direction as
well.....so, I hope this serves the group. If a handful of folks
here want to take on one or two issues at a time, that would be great.

I hope the subject works. This is a very compelling subject for many
people. The USA is in the midst of one of the biggest financial
transitions in decades - - those of you who read financial information
daily will agree. We are making this move now because we want to get
on the road before fuel hits $5 to $6 a gallon or more and it will.

We do have a campground membership and will likely keep busy doing
seasonal work. If anyone has input there, that would be great. I
have performed sales consulting out of an RV before and really enjoyed
that - - I have a bunch of management and sales experience as well as
management consulting work which has kept me busy over the years. So,
we plan to have something to do......while having some 4 to 6 month
breaks to travel overseas.

Thanks for any input!
