Re: [diesel_mercedes] Voltage & Temp saga 1979 300SD

I just looked at Diesel Giants website Thermostat Replacement and modification
and he mentions an arrow or jiggle hole in the t stat.  Does that sound right?  I know when I replaced the t-stat(I thought I put Behr in) I didn't look for an arrow.  Now I'm second guessing what I did.  LOL

Thanks,
Bud

Thanks Nate. I took it out and drove her hard and never broke 100C. I did find a seep in the expansion tank seem and a seep around the bypass hose by the thermostat.
Am going to change all the hoses and tank. Scratching my head if I should change the water pump.

When I was running Klima I equipped Mercedes , I too had what I considered raised temperatures although I don't recall ever actually overheating one .

I did usually drill a tiny , 3/16" hole in the flange edge of my thermostats to help air bubbles from forming in the water jacket , this seemed to help a lot .

Thanks all.  Had done a flush and changed the thermostat in the fall.  I did not do the citric flush though.  The system looked spotless and I believe the PO's mechanic used G05, definitely wasn't green.

Hi Bud ;

Your W-116 uses the wretched Klima - I HVAC system , it's a PIA no matter what .

Your cooling fan is kaputi , get another one , OEM's are not terribly expensive but you can use any old aftermarket or junkyard fan as long as it's BIG .

Do not waste one moment fooling with the worn out bushings in the old fan , if it doesn't turn freely , any electric fan is bad even though it may still spin when connected .

No more than 10 amperes draw , it's supposed to draw 8 amperes Max.

Be sure to add a relay and not run the fan's current draw through any temp switch .

@ 100° C , your engine is running a bit warm , consider flushing the cooling system well using a dilute mix of Citric Acid Powder and water .

Well, I purchased a voltmeter that plugs into the cigarette lighter because I wanted to know what was going on.

I think I've partially figured it out.  I've noticed when the temp gauge goes to about 110C my voltage was dropping and the car wasn't cooling off at speed unless I went downhill or flat and level.

In stop and go traffic at about 110C the car would cool to about 100C.  My aux fan would never come on.  So the engine driven fan is working.  It was hot out here last week so I'd figure the road temp was at 100F+.  Otherwise flat and level she's been running about 90C.

So I wired up a fuse and connected the aux fan to the battery and promptly blew the fuse.  I used a 10 amp fuse and I think the circuit uses a 15.  I decided to take the fan off this morning to inspect.  It seems stiff.  I've read where the bearings aren't sealed so I was thinking of tearing into it and see if I can clean them or replace them with sealed bearings.

The A/C is not working right now as my climate control system is a mess and I'm going to be working on that after I get the drivability problems (like the battery charging and temp issue) sorted out so that I don't have to worry about da wife using the car.

Anyone on list tear into an aux fan or am I wasting my time?

Thanks,
Bud
