Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Gas pedal Linkage

Chip,

Remember that a 240D is SIMPLE.  There is nothing hidden or complex.

You should be able to see EVERYTHING from the bushing through the firewall to the last bit of linkage just looking into the engine compartment.

(ONE possible exception - there may be some mechanical linkage down to the transmission in a car as early as yours.  IF SO, disconnect that linkage at the top ball end and see if that eliminates your sticking problem.  If it does, you have isolated the problem.)

Does the problem exist when the engine is OFF?

Without adjusting the rods, you can disconnect the sections at each ball.  Start with the section nearest the firewall.  Disconnect, then see if the problem remains.  This way, you isolate the area in which the problem occurs.  You may find a ball that is still binding, despite your lubrication effort.

Have you crawled into the footwell, on your back, being in pain and discomfort and positions that the human body was never meant to assume, and checked to make sure that while sitting for 6 months there was no squirrel's nest (or hornet's nest), or bunched up carpet built up that is blocking the pedal movement?

Because the 240D is such a simple, straightforward design, the solution to your problem is going to turn out to be simple, once you find it.

I will guess that, from half-way and on, one of the rods that is bring pushed is bowing. Something is keeping it from moving further, and it is bending sideways. Can someone watch the whole linkage while you are pushing on the gas pedal?

So I lubed all the balls. But the problem persists. I believe it might be the it may be the bushing in the firewall. How do I access it from the inside of the car I can not even get my fingers up where it travels through the firewall. Is this something I accessed from underneath the car?

Even after lubricating all the connections the pedal feel is linear only halfway through its travel and I really have to squash down hard that second-half where it only moves a fraction farther. I'm guessing it has to be the Bushing but I'm not sure how to get to it.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Let me rephrase that I lubed all the connections I could see from the engine bay. I wonder if I have to go from underneath? perhaps there some connections maybe that I have to lube from underneath the car perhaps?

Considering the problem didn't exist until after it sat for 6+ months it leads me to believe that the bushing is okay and maybe there's a location that I've not lubed?

There isn't a cable , it's all thin steel rods with ball joint ends , they need periodic lubrication , moreso if you live where they use salt on the roads or it rains a lot .

Ma 'Benz says to use ATF , I use Aerosol Chain Lube , it comes with a nifty red plastic snorkel making it easier to squirt into the ball joints as you're operating the throttle with your other hand .

On the firewall is a plastic bushing thing that must not have *any* play , it is made to rotate but as it ages it often lifts up a bit when the throttle is depressed , this means you need another one , new or good used , I've seen them made from chunks of scrap plastic and so on , IMO the correct part works best because it's designed to pivot and allow the engine's normal movement .

There's always plenty of new new ones on junked Mercedes .

Get all the rod balls well lubed up before touching , repairing or adjusting anything else .

Be aware that if you attempt to ajust the rods , you'll prolly screw up the tranny shfting badly as it's all connected to - gether .

Check the spacers if you have the rotating shaft adapter at the other
end of the linkage by the motor.
