Son just picked up a decent set of lids (and inserts) out of the '84 300SD being picked at the u-pull-it.  Even picked up the completely unused first aid kit.  The first aid kit was completely mummified, but the covers seemed pretty good.  Judging from the shine on the paint of the car, though, I get the impression that it spent the vast bulk of its life garaged and out of direct sunlight, which makes a huge difference on the condition of the interior plastics.

They were still selling new 1st aide lids recently, and maybe still do.

I never saw one at a PAP that wasn't messed up or quite brittle.

I went to the junkyard the other day and Lo ~ a 300CD that had been dropped in the yard over a month ago, was still largely untouched so I took the driver's door apart and was rewarded with a new new window glass and original M-B lift mechanism , both for less than $50 .

No charge for the steel splinter that's still in my right index finger .

It also had a brand new door check, I bought that as well .

I bought a few other bits and bobs as well but am well pleased to find the driver's door glass and left because they're getting hard to find and most of the time the glass has longitudinal scratches in it.....

It's a bear to replace the glass, you have to take the door 3/4 the way apart and remove the rearmost vertical guide then you can lift the window up *just* enough to get it through the cut away in the trailing edge of the door .

I wanted to attack this to - day but it rained so maybe Thursday .

I'm still looking for a good first aid box lid .

Speaking of MB diesel-powered jeeps, I am endlessly amused that while we all love our OM617 5-cylinder motors, it's the humble OM616 that outlasted the OM617, remaining in production well into the 2000s.  It looks like they might have finally stopped production, but in 1982, Bajaj Tempo Motors of India (now known as Force Motors) acquired the rights to manufacture the OM616 engine to power their line of light trucks.  The OM616 went on to serve a distinguished second life there in several configurations, including a weird 90-hp turbocharged version that powered the "Force Gurhka" extreme off-road vehicle.

It's unclear to me exactly when the OM616 finally went out of production, but they kept churning them out well into the 2000s.  Daimler-Benz owned a minority stake in the company until 2001, and their jeep equivalents of the 200s look very similar to older G-wagons.  I think I saw a picture of a 2005 Gurkha on the InterWebs that still had an OM616 under the hood.  A 2016 advertisement referenced a 2.6 liter "OM616-derived" motor.
