Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Trouble going up hills with 1983 300CD

Another place to check is to make sure the turbo is spinning.  The oil around the bearings can leave deposits and cause the shaft to seize.  It's more likely to occur in cars that aren't revved up enough to get the turbo spinning and the oil flowing through it.

You can check that the turbo is spinning by removing the big U-shaped hose between the turbo and the air filter, and start the car.  You should see the compressor fan spinning, even at idle.  If it is, it's good.

Ray, my poor mountain climbing experience has always involved clogged fuel filters (parafin build ups for me). I always change mine annually since I got stranded one night on the side of the road.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Trouble going up hills with 1983 300CD

Is this a Mercedes mechanic?

The E service covers all that, filters, retorque the head, valve adjustment, etc.

Filters should be changed yearly, especially for a car that is stored.  Hopefully

stored with the wheels off the ground.

If not a MB mechanic, find a good independent one in your area.

Check the valves.  How is the vac pump?  If the seal is leaking it will cause all sorts

of problems, the hoses, brake servo, etc.

Change the filters and do a Diesel purge.  Then change the filters again.

Let us know the results.

I don’t have a specific part to look at, but …start cheapest and easiest to look at and go up to more expensive. Fuel filters are a good place to start. I’ve heard that diesel can grow bacteria. Consider some fuel additive per Nate’s experiences. Valve adjustments …per Nate.  Bill in Oregon

I have been a fan of this group since nearly its inception, but this is the first time I have had the need for some advice.

I am a one owner of the vehicle and it has served me well for about 145,000 miles.

Nine years ago, I left the USA to work as a missionary/English teacher for the United Methodist Church in Prague, Czech Republic.

Each year since 2006, I have returned to the USA, picked up the car from its heated storage garage, and traveled around the USA for about 6 weeks and 5,000 miles.  Then the car goes back to storage, and I head back to Prague.

During this time, I have had annual oil and filter replacements. a brake job, a new battery, a new water pump, and a new radiator.

Last year, I noticed that when I went up a hill on the Interstate in the Tennessee mountains, I experienced a lack of power.  I could not get above 55 mph.  In the past 70+ was not a problem.  Otherwise, the car runs great.

My mechanic gives the car a quick once over each year, and that's about it.

I don't think the fuel line filters have been replaced in the past 9 years  Is replacing these filters where I should begin?  If so, how many filters are there?

Are there other things I should do or ask my mechanic to look for?

I will arrive back in the USA in two weeks.  The first thing I'll do is take the car to my mechanic.  Any advice on where he should begin, would certainly be appreciated.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Charging System more woes

Dean – All connections clean.  Ground from battery, etc.  All the cables, terminals should not

have any frayed ends, etc.  No rust, corrosion where the grounds connect.  Use the

electrical dielectric grease.  Same stuff for spark plug ends.

Well, charged up and started the car.  Still no charge.  It seemed prety simple, I don't think I could have put the voltage regulator in wrong.
