[diesel_mercedes] Riding every day in Denver, Summer Fuels, Windshield Gasket

Where are you, Gerry?

It's been warm enough around here that I've been on the 'sycle everywhere I go. (But then, I'll ride as long as it's above 20 degrees F and the roads are dry.)  Then, last week, when I was looking for interior bits for an MDX at the Denver UPull, I caught a familiar profile out of the corner of my eye.  What the..?!  Sure enough, there was a W116 sitting there, a '79 SD, like mine, barely touched.  It wasn't even listed on their website.  So, in addition to a bunch of little stuff, I scored a decent windshield and really nice gasket for $36.  Today, with temps going up into the low '60s, I decided to get mine up to my shop to install this new find.  At just about freezing this morning, it took a bit of cranking before the old gal fired up on all five. I'm pretty sure I haven't put in any fuel since August, and it probably still has summer blend in it.

It sure is nice having not only a clear, uncracked windshield, but not having to listen to the wind blow past all the cracks and holes that was such a feature of the old gasket.  Worst rubber I've ever seen on a car not sitting abandoned in a field....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] I Think We're All GOMERS On This Bus =8-)

My 40 foot 1954 GMC bus was 6volt. But I had to put in a 8volt battery and rig the voltage regulator. Max

I'll take that as a compliment Max .

I now have the block heater cord's block end, I need to get busy and rustle up a nice heavy duty _long_ cord with molded on three prong plug and solder & heat shrink it up just in case I ever get foolish and go some place that's actually cold .

Most folks in cold country use 5 ~ W40 Diesel rated oils, they help those old 6 volt beaters crank over better too .

What oil do you use? I don't care what anyone says about starting their diesel Mercedes at -40, ect., ect. Sure you might get it started a few times but eventually you will kill something, battery, starter. The best thing for these cars is a factory type block heater. These things work so amazing.
Here is the true story of how I ended up with 2- 240's. I bought my first one, the 1980 4spd. Of course I loved it. Learned about how safe they are for non air bag cars, crumple zones and all so I bought on for my oldest kid who was heading off to college. The car came from San Jose area. 1981 240 auto.Driving it home (900 miles) I realized that the car ran great. I told my kid if he didnt want it I would buy it back from him. So actually I bought it twice. Bozeman was his school of choice. Now I know Montana gets cold so we put in a block heater. I was wrongly assuming he could plug the car in from his dorm room. Turned out there was no place to plug it in. I even call the guy who runs the college and complained that my kid needed to plug his car in. He informed me rather curtly "Montana winters and diesel cars do not match" Eastern Montana gets really cold. That winter it was -40 several times. His car did not run at all that winter and he left and said "I will never go back to Montana". He hated that car so I bought it back from him and then he got a Subaru WRX-STI. He said the Mercedes was a old gomer car. I guess we all are gomers. Max     It finally warmed up to 32 degrees here in NE Wa.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driving every day in Wisconsin

It is exciting to find a low mileage car, where you can drive the hell out of it for years, and still have a lower mileage car than most.

12yrs ago I found my car with 93K on it, whereas most others I saw at the time were in the 200K-300K range. What I noticed most was the seats, and the suspension, were much nicer.

Now I'm at 220K or so. Hoping for another decade.

Thanks! Finding a low milage car with complete documentation was luck, but I'm still faced with age related degradation of the plastic parts.

On a slightly different subject.  I just bought an 83 300D with 96,000 miles on it.  It came with a Mercedes Battery which looks recent.  The car came with documentation from day 1 and shows that the last time the valves were adjusted was about 10,000 miles ago.  What is the recommended time between valve adjustments?  I have the wrenches but I'm a little light on ambition at the moment.

Good deal Mark ! .

The last couple Mercedes batteries I have bought were wallymart ones, bought 'On The Fly' as we were traveling when they pooped out .

So far, so good .

I think the one in my Coupe is over 6 years old now....

I hope they're not salting the roads ! .

Hey folks,
My car has been quite reliable despite single digit temps. The last two
days, when coming home from work, I have forgotten to plug her in. The
first day, the 4 cylinder cranked slowly, but caught one cylinder at a
time. Yesterday, the battery proved itself not up to the task. I never
thought my car cranked as freely as I have heard others, so I was not
really surprised. I bought the mid-priced battery. With that one she
whipped over and started instantly.
I did not buy the car to be driven so much in the winter, but we lost a
car through a crash this summer and it was pressed into full-time
service. My only regret is that running it in snow and salt is surely
doing to degrade the body, which was quite nice.

Don't forget to change the subject header when you change the subject.....

If it's starting O.K,. and run smoothly on all five cylinders, wait until you get some decent weather then do it, don't wait until Summer though .
