[diesel_mercedes] Re: Vacuum Shifting Valve

Brian ;

Are you saying he broke it ? .

They get crispy as they age, any yellw plastic on any German car (switch innards etc.) is highly suspect and going to do you dirt very soon .

The back story:  When I left Mary (1983 w123 300d) in So. Cal. to get her rebuilt engine installed, I was on a tight schedule to get from the airport to pick her up and start the drive back to Washington. The jr. mechanic mumbled something about "they don't make these anymore so it will shift a little hard." I did not pay as much attention as I should have - what he was showing me was the Vacuum Shifting Valve (VCV) which was used on 1980-1984 w123's and w126's. See video https://mercedessource.com/store/1980-1984-diesel-transmission-vacuum-shifting-valve-vcv-tested-instructions-included

Ok - I need to find one and install it. Any of you have one laying around anywhere? They really don't make them anymore, so it means finding a good used one, or rebuilding one (hard to do).

[diesel_mercedes] Tranny VCV & Shut Off Switch

It's replaceable and adjustable, should be one out there somewhere, I have no junk yard plans just now, hopefully I'll remember the next time Tom and I go .

As far as the engine shutoff valve under the dashboard, I'm betting simply swapping the hoses where they attach to the back of the key switch will fix you right up ~ it's supposed to be open when the key is in the off position .

Mine works a charm now. Starts instantly and shuts off more quickly. It must have been bleeding vacuum away from the supply side instead of the control side. Full power every time, no more braving traffic, hoping some moron doesn't come flying up my ass.
Also, trans mount is not back to the original and the car is smooth as snot on a doorknob.
Reglued detached fabric on rear doorway trim.
Adjusted front door strikers. Both now shut easily.
Yes, progress, and all for free!

Mostly I use Diesel Kleen, K100 and Startron .

Haven't been writing much lately. Working on my dad's estate and trying
to keep the 240 in running shape. Driving it 50 miles a day seems to
have cleaned the engine up to a point. A few weeks ago, I made the
mistake of overdosing it on diesel cleaner. I suffered through a tankful
of horrible idles. Word to the wise: there is really such a thing as too
much of a good thing.
I still am having trouble getting it to start after short runs. But I
think I am on to something. Tonight, after cranking it to near death, I
just for the heck of it decided to disconnect the vacuum line going to
the kill diaphragm. A hiss of air showed that it was still in kill mode.
Replacing it, I jumped in the car and it still would not start. This
time I left it off and it fired perfectly!
So, my problem is that the ignition vacuum valve works to kill the
engine just fine, but it does not release the vacuum once the key is on.
Here's the question:
Turning the key counter clockwise, the valve opens a path for vacuum to
pull the vacuum valve, killing the engine, but once the key is on, how
does it release said vacuum? Is it possible that the lines can be
reversed at the valve, and one of the ports opens to the atmosphere to
release the vacuum and the other does not? And being reversed, would it
also cause a vacuum leak?
I am going to reverse those hoses in the morning and will report back.
If this is true, I will for the first time have a truly reliable car.
On another front, I bought a transmission mount from Rock Auto a while
ago and finally got around to installing it. I should have thrown it
away instead of the old one. The center attachment, which I now realize
serves only as a safety, is cast into the rubber on the new one so
thoroughly and stiffly that when installed, it feels as if the engine is
sitting straight down on the cross member. The car drummed and vibrated
like a tractor. I couldn't turn the radio up high enough to drown out
the noise! I luckily was able to fish my original out of the trash (I
now realize that there is nothing wrong with it: the center is SUPPOSED
to be loose!) and reinstall it. I figured out that it might have settled
a little and the center was transferring some vibrations, but now that I
see how it is designed, I left the through-bolt loose (it passes through
a pair of slots in the cross member intended to make for this type of
adjustment) until the last, with the weight of the trans back on the
mount. I then tightened the cross bolt, making sure that it was centered
in the area it passes through. The car is smoother than ever.

[diesel_mercedes] Death Valley Ride

Yes, you should join us .

Remember to clean the centrifuge first and adjust the valves by ear until the click as gaps are insufficient with the torsion bar valve springs and all .

Check the ful advance ignition timing @ 3,000RPM and set it dead nuts between the two hash marks .

Get  a small disc typ rare earth magnet from Harbor Freight and put in on the drain plug....

Many far older than your CB450 (great bike BTW !)have made this trip ~ no need to run it wide open .

I rode a '67 Honda CL90 once of thrice, others have ridden all manner of old bikes, 305 Scramblers , Dreams, Benlys, on and on .

Hmm....  I should have one of the CB450s put together by then.  It'd be a real hoot to ride a nearly 50-year old bike 1000 miles to Death Valley....
