RE: [diesel_mercedes] 1984 300SD - Sylvia's got squishy brakes...

Yes on the rubber (flexible) brake line at each wheel if they’re original. Bill in Oregon

Replace the master cylinder, might be time for the booster as well.

Check the reservoir, if it has junk in it, then the MC has lost the

seals.

Bench bleed the MC, some kits come with the hoses.  I purchased some

steel brake line to cut and bend for MC bleeding.  Your son can be the assistant for the brake bleeding.  Check the brake hoses, mine

were shot.   NAPA had Semperit brake hoses.

Just started today, pump the pedal, brakes quickly and strong with boost, hold at idle and eventually goes to the floor but holds. Pump and is back up top, slowly fades to floor. Not good. Seems like fluid pressue related not vac - checked fluid reservoir and seemed ok, but will keep an eye on. Afraid it may be in master or booster. Any / all suggestions welcome - my son slammed on the brakes a few times today by mistake while he was driving an wondering if it's related. Too late if so, but one more piece of data. Thx in advance, wish me luck :-)

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 1984 300SD - Sylvia's got squishy brakes...

Sounds like the seals in the master cylinder. Older seals and slamming on the brakes MAY have caused them to start leaking pressure back into the reservoir, which allows the pedal to drop. If master cylinder is original I would buy a new one; they can be rebuilt but are usually pitted from years of moisture condensation.  Bill in Oregon

[diesel_mercedes] Locks & Shaking

You're right on track with the fuel additives , be sure to keep a weather eye on the clear intake screen and clean it / change it as soon as it fills up with crud .

If the engine was covered in oily wet , the motor mounts will be soft but , it's far easier to change the tiny shock absorbers , they help a lot too .

Thanks, I forgot about the dealer plan.  I had blocked that because of the problems cited for late model key replacement.  I usually use a cocktail of Startron and a treatment with antigel etc additives from my local truck stop.

Do a Diesel Purge right after you've adjusted the valves and changed filters , _ALL_ of them  .

Take the reggie to the dealer (or better , to Tom @ M-B Classic Center) and buy two new keys , they'll fit perfectly .

Then if you later decide you like the car , you can buy a new original ignition lock cylinder that matches the rest of the locks and install it .

Just bought an 84 300D runs good but idles very rough any suggestions? I plan to change oils and filters and adjust the valves.  Anything else?  Also the PO loaned the car to a friend who lost the key.  Someone did a semi butcher job on the dash and installed a lock and replacement key.  These obviously don't fit the doors and trunk.  Any suggestions or does someone have a set of front door locks, a trunk lock and keys.  If the vacuum system worked, I'd only need a driver's door lock and a trunk lock for safety.  The car shuts off, but I don't know the condition of the rest of the vacuum system.
