Wow,

I am developing a love hate relationship with our car. We named it Double G (Golden Goose) because we have not had to stop at a gas station for 4 months (over 7K miles). She purrs like a kitten on WVO, Biogreasel and 100% biodiesel. Can not hardly tell the difference.

The bad, someone rearended the car and was estimated as 4K in repair and the insurance company wants to give us $1600 dollars and total it. We paid 2300 and did 500 in repairs ect. We also have 3 issues I hope you guys can help with.

1. drivers window will not go up or down- just started last night
2. Cruise control will accelerate only if hold the lever up but will not do anything else. ( is there a light that tells if it is on)
3. A/C not blowing cold.

do not really know where to start with these issues. Drivers window and cruise are probably the priority. A/C, my son may be able to dx when he gets into his A/C class in college.

thanks, NICK

[diesel_mercedes] Easter Sunday

As Nate mentioned, we went looking for a wagon door to fix the window in his 300TD.  No Joy.

Afterwards, just before the sun went down, Nate finished the flush job on my 300SD. It has been running for 3 weeks on fresh anti-freeze, after he did the citrus flush and distilled water reflush, getting out tons of junk.  But in that three weeks, the anti-freeze has turned very dark and opaque, strongly suggesting that the flush had loosened stuff up but not gotten it all out.

So, he drained it, and it came out full of mud.  Pulled the radiator hoses off and flushed and back flushed the radiator, more mud and gunk.  The flushed and back flushed the block, more gunk and while back flushing, a lot of foamy suds from the citrus residue.

After a lot of just hose flushing, he filled it a few times with distilled water and I ran it up the hill and back.  Finally, we refilled it with anti-freeze.

During most of the operation, he kept the aux water pump running, to keep the heater core flushed as well.

One of the problems he spotted last time was that the hose bib on the thermostat housing was corroded pretty badly.  While walking the yard, we found a better one, with a good looking thermostat in place.  He slapped that on after flushing the block.

Now I have put 100 miles on since the flush and the temperature hasn't yet reached "80" on the guage.  Mostly it hovers between the hash mark at "40" and the one just above that.  I'm beginning to wonder if that 'new' thermostat never closes?

I have to sa that all the gunk that came out the flush job occupied a huge volume.  So I'm thinking that he flushed it up toy at least a 3.5 liter engine.  Maybe even a 4.2!

After the flush, the odometer clocked over 348,800 miles.  Still a lot of original parts still ticking away there.

Today, while Nate was chillin with Shirley out in Fontuckey, I wandered through the yard at the intersection of the 110 and the 91 freeways.  Not a single 300TD in the place.  Several 126s and more recent sedans and convertibles, and one 116SD.  But not one 123 in the whole yard!

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Horns

Here is Nate and SWMBO heading off to Fontana: http://www.youtube.com/user/Waltonen91#p/a/u/2/NGHOzTYd0Fg

Some here may recal I like horns , not all of them , just the good ones like Ma 'Benz stpped fitting in 1967 or so .

Tom and I spent most of Saturday walking the various localPick-A-Part yarks in a futile search for a TD right rear dor .

We did however , find some W-108 & W-110 horns , $5 each , I plan to service them and install on my Diesel Coupe and SWMBO's 300TD as it only has one working horn now .

To - day is EASTER SUNDAY and we were supposed to drive way out to Fontucky to visit her family so I arose early and at sunup I was working on the TD , installing a cigar hose in lieu of the old 5/16" generic , non Diesel rated fuel hose , I also replaced the capped 5th injector hose as it was leaking , replaced the front window switches as they were worn away the decals and the lift function on the driver's side was wonky to boot (TIP : always check wrecks for new , dealer window $witches !) . it turns out the black European console cover is vastly better than the laminated wood U.S. market ones as it is designed to more easily service th various switches .

I fiddled with a whole raft of little things and the car is running tip - top , in spite of the rain we zipped from L.A. to Fontucky @ 85 - 90 MPH , she noticed (& commented on) how quickly we got here but didn't notice how fast I drove because this low mileage wagon is *so* smooth & quiet . =8-) .

Hey..

As you may recall, my g/f blew the front end off my '84 SD.

She hit JUST to the right of the right bumper attachment, taking down a tree with an 8" trunk.

I have flush fit headlights, I was going to install, those are going on..

I was going to replace the a/c compressor, while it's easier to get to, replace the flex lines between the tranny and the cooler. I've got a new reciever/dryer, and will be getting a new condenser with the clip.. The radiator and antifreeze were good.. I'm going to flush the radiator-- with hopes of keeping those that way.. The fan has multiple broken blades, so I was going to go to an electric fan setup, similar to the "diesel giant" setup..

http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedeselectricfaninstall.htm

He wants over $300 for his kit.. I'm thinking I can safely find SOMETHING cheaper-- would you not agree??

Are there any other "services" I should consider doing, while I have "better access" to do it??

I'm going to do some rust repair along the passenger rear jack point, and have a 2" reciever hitch built.

I was running an "open" exhaust (nothing attached beyond the downpipe)

I may try to do a straight exhaust or a single low restriction muffler, as the noise really isn't that great. Not sure it's in the budget right now..

Any thoughts???

I'm using a cheap glasspack on my 2.7 litre Sprinter which  keeps the noise level in acceptable limits.

Junkyard E-Fan wired live through a relay , $300 is_rediculous_ .

If he noise doesn't bother you , no need for any muffler but do run a tailpipe out to the back of the car .

Mercedes mufflers & resonators are ZERO back pressure anyways so experiment with one or the other to get a pleasing exhaust note .

Don't let SWMBO drive your cars anymore .

All my fans were toast, so I went to a Auto parts store, probably Schnucks, got a universal fan for about $60, works fine. Max
