Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Atuomatic

Mark,

Kroger's, Wal-Mart, and HD all sell diesel. And, he most I've paid for road diesel since last August has been $3.749/gal. I paid $3.609/gal yesterday! In fact diesel is a few cents cheaper than high-test gasoline these days! Regular gas is $3.40-ish around here right now.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Atuomatic

Guys,

I've been keeping track of my mileage in my 240D.

It's an 83, 4 speed manual, mix of around town and highway driving. I never cruise more than 62mph on the highway. On the interstate, I like to cruise 58-62mph. Odometer doesn't work, so all my mileage is based on GPS odometer. It has air and cruise control, but neither work.

I've tracked nearly 3600 miles and over that distance, it has gotten right at 35mpg. No additives, just Home Depot diesel. I did change the oil and install Delo 5W-40 synthetic in it this last weekend so I'll see if that improves mileage any.

I bought the car on Feb 10th and adjusted the valves a week later. About a week after that, one if the 14 year old tires suddenly deflated at 60mph, so I put a new set of tires on it, too. I've kept track of the mileage since I got it.

I've owner well over 100 cars so far and this one is in my top 5 all-time favorites. It accelerates slowly, but once it gets wound up, it'll cruise at 80+ all day long. Just don't make me lift!

When I bought the car, it had been sitting under a carport for 8 years. I should have changed the oil when I got it, but just didn't have the time and it ran so well. Over the first 3500 miles, it only burned a quart of oil. Based on that and it's relative oil-tightness, I felt it was definitely worth synthetic.

Plus, it's my favorite color: medium blue over dark blue M-B tex. I've got several friends bugging me to sell it to them.

I agree;

It's far too quiet but Spring is coming so hopefully folks will soon begin up fixin' and writing again .

Remember : there's a 17 MM stud / bolt thing on the side of the sun roof motor so you should be able to close it , just GO EASY ! if it doesn't want to turn , DO NOT force it , it's prolly time to take the tracks and cables out for cleaning and greasing .

Dangit ~ SWMBO says I have to go right now .

[diesel_mercedes] It is Too Quiet Here

So, I have to say:

1.  My hood pad is now 5 years old (Mary) so I am going to my local car wash where I will scrape it, vacuum it, and strip it off.
2.  I will look at my #5 glow plug (Mary) and decide whether to change it (#5 is hard to get to), or chicken out and do #1 (easy to get to).
3.  Order a couple of rear passenger door check hinges. I can live with them only opening 1/2 way, but it is an easy fix so why not.
4.  Sun/Moon roof is stuck 6" open (Martha). Covered it with plastic and tape but my wife is embarrassed. I need to see if it is electrical (switch) or mechanical. Hope it is the switch as I have a dozen switches.
5.  I flushed and charged to coolant on Martha, so might as well order some coolant for Mary at the same time I get the door check hinges. Autozone raised their "free" shipping from $50 to $75 so the free shipping is not as attractive as it used to be.
6.  All this typing reminded me to get a power steering seal too. I've had a slow leak forever that I need to fix.

OK, off to the "fix it" desk.
