[diesel_mercedes] Re: Size of phillips screws that hold in the voltage regulator?

IIRC ;

It's a # 1 but I always use a 90 degree screwdriver to get in there as my W-123's AC pipes are in the way of a regular screw driver .

You can find passable 90 degree screw drivers @ The .99 CENTS Store , just remember to always hold the screw driver *perfectly* in the head of the screw or it'll slip and ruin it .

Should that happen I know a handy trick , not pretty but it works .

It's best to pay close attention to the screwdriver placement instead .
I assume you've realized this job is best done from underneath as you lie on your back ? .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Smoking

Yes ;

I'll need to get some (or make) adapters .

As the engine was rebuilt not long ago , I am hoping it's not the cause of the smoke ~ I'm still running the IP the car came with , gotta fix all the old " maybe " stuff before attacking the engine proper .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Size of phillips screws that hold in the voltage regulator?

I don't know the size - but I always get an assortment of nuts, bolts, and screws to keep as inventory so I don't have to spend $2.00 of fuel to get a 2 cent screw.

Thanks in advance!

    No.  I've got a bunch of those tools, long and narrow.  Don't fit the spot.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dammit

Tom,

    The hearse is a 1980 Cadillac / SS Victoria.  Not a Benz.

    On the road, the difference is obvious.  My 300SD with 360,2++ miles still gets 27mpg around town and better on the road.  The hearse gets 10.5 around town and up to 12 on road trips.  (Gasoline, not diesel.)

    While I'm writing to you, maybe you can provide some Benz help.  I have a round Mercedes tool kit, part #140 890 0111.  I found it in a p-a-p yard, empty.  I've been trying to fill it up.

    Right now, I have the lug wrench, but now whatever part fits in the open space on the right, just by the socket end of the lug wrench.  What part goes in that pocket?

    I have the two screw drive shafts (philips and flat) and the handle (don't let Nate know, he'll go crazy with jealousy).  I do not have whatever the piece is that goes on the left side, beside the screwdriver shafts.  What is that piece?

    I have a Mercedes tube wrench, part #0005814101 in the long center pocket.  But it is clearly not the proper tool for that space, since it is too short.  What belongs in that space?

    I have two open end wrenches in the spaces in the bottom left corner.  Both fit fine.  One is a 17 / 14 mm and the other is a 10 / 8 mm.  But among my spare tools, I have a Mercedes 17 / 13 mm, which also fits in the wrench spot.  Which one is the proper one for this tool kit, the 17 / 14 or the 17 / 13?

    There is a large open pocket on the right side of the kit, beside the wrenches.  What is supposed to go in that spot?

    I have not yet found the proper pliers for the pocket at the top of the tool kit.

    It's an interesting kit, but looks more for the purpose of impressing buyers than for real work.  The tools are good quality, but there are not enough of them. I'd like to fill it out.  But I think for our regular p-a-part and driveway tool usage, I'll stick with the tool box full of Craftsman and other toys.

Cordially,
The other Tom: 300SD, 360,2++ miles.

I began working early this morning before the sun came up and Tom came over to get the Hearse smogged , after a fun day of sweating and working , I replaced my turbo and air cleaner "T" bracket and adjusted the valves on;y to discover the damned thing still trails blue smoke .

I have replaced _FIVE_ air cleaner "T" brackets now , I'm not buying any more new ones ! this last was a re pop and the crappy spot welds simply let go ~ I considered having it welded until I noticed the 8MM hole on that lower leg , the really hard to reach one , was stress cracked too so out it went to scrap .

Now , I have to fix my injector pop tester and test all my injectors then check the timing of the injection pump , fiddle with or replace the rack damper bolt as it's a silver (old design) one , if still no joy I'll try an M Code IP and if the sonofa b*tch still trails blue smoke after that I'll go kill the guy who rebuilt my engine....

would  a leak down or compression test give some form of diagnosis?

Surely the Guy replaced liners and pistons too.Thats why a proper rebuild,or rebuilt cost so much.Liners are cheap,but the pistons cost too much.
To Nate the rings still might have not seated yet.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dammit

what year is your caddy? My father had a 1970 with a huge engine... a sorts of smog pipes everywhere...I was getting rid o his effects recently and found the original 8-track tape that  came with the car. It still works; I converted it to mp3.

could it be the valve guide bushings in the head of your rebuilt were not replaced?
