Re: [diesel_mercedes] How I spent my Super Bowl Sunday

Well, we used to take them apart and put the block in a hot tank overnight, then get the block magnafluxed to check for cracks beforfe we rebuilt them.

Today, I would just send the core away and get a rebuilt from some reputable outfit because I am too old to want to play with rebuilding. But, you are young and have time and energy to rebuild if you want to (+ a warm garage).

Weak, I know. Bringing everyone back up to speed, found a sweet 1979 300SD down in Florida for cheap that was truly rust free and in imacculate shape but the DPO overheated it and they didn't want to spend the money to see what happened. Here's what happened:

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Vacuum pump 101

Sometimes it is closer than the same year; i.e., there are splits in parts depending on VIN numbers within the same year. Or, you can find a 1983 body with a 1982 transplant engine like Mary, or some other tweaks. Or, the old grey market trick.

Both cars built in 1979 but two totally different vacuump pumps. Why for?

You've still not learned your lesson I see =8-) .

Fla has NO ' rust free ' cars ! .

Unless _you_ personally go see it and take it far enough to inspect the pinchwelds , it's just another $250 junker .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Head light and fog light problem

First thing :

Use a test light to check the current flow across the fuses....

If _ANY_ have white metal strips (Aluminum) scrap them ALL and replace with copper strip ones , you'll need white (8 Amp.) & red (16amp.) ones , any VW / BMW /PORSCHE / MERCEDES Partshaus or garage will have them in stock for $5 the strip of 5 fuses...

I assume you know to pull the headlight switch out for the fog/driving lights and they only work on low beam...

[diesel_mercedes] ALDA cleaned out - 100% clogged on 84 300D with 120k miles

The "whatzitdo" pix from bartonfiske reminded me to clean the ALDA which I had forgotten all about...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diesel_mercedes/photos/album/1102994371/pic/1225428780/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc

My ALDA banjo bolt was completely stopped up all the way through and the hose was black with soot. Cleaned the bolt out with a wire and some gum cutter spray aka carb cleaner. Disconnected the hose at the other end and sprayed that out as well, didn't seem to be uber-clogged, it dripped black but there was no problem getting throughput. Took about an hour since I spent 30 minutes looking for the hose clamp that flew across the garage (didn't find it...have to get another one tomorrow). Haven't driven it yet. The banjo bolt was surprisingly loose and absolutely 100% clogged. Car only has about 120k miles on it. Maybe there is too much oil going through the turbo. Anyone know?

Mine is an 84 300D so slightly different from these pix but basically the same job:
